MADISON, WISC. - The Madison College softball team posted three run-rule wins at
Robert D. Goodman Softball Field against two teams from the bottom of the Region 4 standings. The WolfPack downed Kishwaukee College in a 10-0 contest that was the only one played on Friday, April 23, and then returned Saturday, April 24 to mirror that effort with wins of 14-0 and 13-3 against South Suburban College. The victories pushed the current 'Pack win streak to ten games.
Game #1 (Friday): Madison College 10, Kishwaukee College 0 (5 innings)
After taking a 1-0 lead in the first on a passed ball, Madison College generated its first RBI in the second when sophomore
Paige Peloquin tripled to right to score
Kylle Hraban. A six-run third inning busted the game open thanks to six hits and an error.
Mallory Sterling singled in a run to start the surge and
Taylor VonBehren ended it with a two-run single to left. Hraban, a sophomore from Waupun, Wisconsin, added to the run total with a two-run homer in the fourth for her first career home run.
Hraban and Peloquin, a former Janesville Craig HS athlete, each went 3 for 3 to lead the 'Pack at the plate. Hraban added a team-high two runs scored and two batted in, while Peloquin registered one of each. VonBehren, from DeForest, Wisconsin, also had two RBI and a run scored as the only other player with multiple hits.
Pitchers
Cathryn Hiller (3-1) and
Abbie Cavadini combined to limit the Kishwaukee College (0-21) bats to two hits as each surrendered one. Hiller earned the win after going four innings and striking out five. She also walked a pair. Cavadini pitched the fifth inning and recorded one strikeout.
Madison College has won 13 straight against the Kougars and are now 18-15 all-time.
Game #2 (Saturday): Madison College 14, South Suburban College 0 (5 innings)
Saturday's opener started with a bang as the WolfPack put up eight runs on six hits and three errors.
Megan Miklesh singled in
Brianna Brandner to make it 2-0 after an error allowed the first run to score. Then follow a walk to
Katherine Brandl that forced in a run, freshman
Abbie Cavadini doubled with the bases loaded to drive in three for a 6-0 lead.
Mallory Sterling also doubled in the next at bat, and later scored as Brandner drove a single to center. Brandl picked up another RBI in the second to make it 9-0, which is stayed until the fourth when the home team used five hits and an error to go up 14-0.
Taylor VonBehren and
Kylle Hraban each had two-run base hits in the inning.
The balanced offensive attack featured 12 different players with a hit and only
Brianna Brandner with two hits, which led to two runs and a run scored. Miklesh and Sterling each scored two times, while Cavadini lead all players with three runs batted in.
Sterling was also dealing from the pitcher's circle en route to improving her record to 5-0. The Chippewa Falls, Wisconsin, native set down eight batters via strikeout, walked three, and allowed just one hit in a scoreless effort.
Game #3 (Saturday): Madison College 13, South Suburban College 3 (5 innings)
Visiting South Suburban College (1-19) actually took a 1-0 lead in the nightcap with a first inning run, however, the WolfPack answered with two in the bottom half as
Mia Noelker and
Casey Fountain hit consecutive run-scoring doubles.
Maddie Kvatek boosted the lead to 4-1 in the second with a two-run single through the right side, and later doubled in two more runs to begin a four-run fourth inning. Noelker had a RBI and a run scored in the fourth to extend the advantage to 8-2. Several extra base hits in the fifth ended the game via run rule, with
Briel Burg's triple scoring
Katie Joten, Kvatek's double bringing in Burg, and
Megan Miklesh's triple clearing the bases for a 13-3 edge.
Kvatek, a product of Stevens Point, Wisconsin, was 3 for 4 with a two doubles, a career-high five RBI, and two runs scored. Noelker added two hits, two runs batted in, and a team-leading three runs scored. Burg, a former Hartford Union HS athlete, also had two hits, two runs scored, and another batted in. Miklesh produced three RBI on her lone base hit.
Cathryn Hiller (4-1) pitched all five innings to earn her second win in as many days. She was tagged for three earned runs on eight hits and two strikeouts.
Madison College (26-3) is now 13-3 all-time against the Bulldogs.
