MADISON, WISC. - Freshman
Katie Joten put on a hitting display Sunday at
Robert D. Goodman Softball Field, helping the Madison College softball team earn a split of a Region 4 and in-state doubleheader with Bryant & Stratton College. The WolfPack secured a 7-2 win in the opener, before falling 8-5 to the Bobcats in the finale. The loss marks the first for the 'Pack in the head-to-head series since the two teams began playing in 2018, and Madison College is now 8-1 against the Bobcats.
Game #1: Madison College 7, Bryant & Stratton College 2 (7 innings)
Katie Joten's big day began with a walk to lead off the first inning, which she turned into a run after stealing second and racing home on
Maddie Kvatek's pop fly single. Two innings later,
Abby Luczak tripled to right to score
Brianna Brandner, and
Casey Fountain followed with a single up the middle to score Luczak for a 3-0 edge. Bryant & Stratton College cut it to a one-run game in the fourth, however, the 'Pack had an answer. With a runner on and two outs, Joten roped a triple to right and scored on a Brandner base hit off the pitcher to make it 5-2. Joten finished off the Bobcats with a two-run bomb to right for her seventh long ball of the season.
The infielder from Little Chute, Wisconsin, drove in three runs and scored three more as part of her 2 for 3 effort with a walk. Brandner, who hit behind Joten at the top of the lineup, and Burg, who batted ahead of Joten when the lineup turned over, each had two hits as well. Brandner finished with a run and a run batted in, while Burg tallied two runs scored.
Fresh off her five-inning no-hitter three days earlier, freshman
Casey Fountain (8-1) earned her third consecutive win after limiting the Bobcats to two earned run and six hits. The righthander struck out five batters in seven innings of work.
Game #2: Bryant & Stratton College 8, Madison College 5 (7 innings)
Game two saw Bryant & Stratton College (25-13) produce one big inning, which was enough for a split of the twin bill. Madison College (27-4) took a 2-0 lead in the first inning as
Abby Luczak singled up the middle with runners on second and third to plate
Katie Joten and
Brianna Brandner. The Bobcats tallied their first run in the third against starter
Lauren Steien, and then used six hits and two WolfPack errors in the fourth inning to tack on six more runs and take a 7-2 lead. Joten had an answer in the bottom half with her second home run of the day by crushing another two-run homer to right for her eighth of the season. Both teams were able to score a run in the seventh, however, the WolfPack fell short with the tyring run on deck.
Joten, again batting from the top spot in the lineup, posted a 2 for 3 effort at the plate with two runs scored and two more batted in. Luczack also went 2 for 3, with the Rosendale, Wisconsin, native driving in a pair of runs.
Steien (6-2) took the loss after allowing seven runs, though only one was earned, on seven hits and a walk. The freshman righty from Blair-Taylor HS had one strikeout over 3.2 innings before giving way to
Mallory Sterling during that difficult fourth inning. Sterling finished the final 3.1 innings with three hits, a walk, and an earned run. She also recorded one K.
