Fountain no-hitter highlights resounding sweep of Waubonsee

Walk-off home run, grand slam power WolfPack past Chiefs to open busy homestand

MADISON, WISC. - Thursday's Region 4 doubleheader against Waubonsee Community College was filled with signature moments as the Madison College softball swept both games in commanding fashion at Robert D. Goodman Softball Field. Freshman Casey Fountain threw a five-inning no-hitter in the opener and ended the 9-0 victory with a walk-off home run, and fellow freshman Katie Joten smashed the season's first grand slam in a 14-6 decision in five innings to cap the day. The two wins improve the WolfPack's lead in the all-time series with the Chiefs to 16-10.

Game #1: Madison College 9, Waubonsee Community College 0 (5 innings)

For the Waubonsee Community College bats, there was no solving what righthander Casey Fountain was throwing at them. The Poynette, Wisconsin, product faced the minimum 15 batters over five innings and came within an error of throwing a perfect game. Fountain struck out five batters to increase her team lead to 59 on the season and improve her team-best record to 7-1.

The offense, meanwhile, provided plenty of support, including some provided by Fountain herself. In the first, Maddie Kvatek doubled home Brianna Brandner for a 1-0 lead. Fountain scored in the second to make it 2-0 when Katie Joten lined a single to left. The WolfPack busted the game wide open in the fourth with seven runs on six hits and an error. Briel Burg, Brandner, Kvatek, and Abbie Luczak each had a run-producing hit as the lead stretched to 6-0. With two runners on and two outs, Fountian ended the game with a run-rule walk-off home run to center.

Fountain's second homer of the year proved to be her lone hit as she drove in a team-high three runs. She and Brandner were tops in runs scored with two each. The former Portage HS athlete was also 1 for 2 and drove in a run. Kvatek, a native of Stevens Point, Wisconsin, lead the 'Pack with two hits that produced two RBI and a run scored.

Game #2: Madison College 14, Waubonsee Community College 6 (5 innings)

Game two featured a huge moment in the game's second inning. Leading 2-0 and with the bases loaded, first year infielder Katie Joten delivered with a grand slam to deep centerfield. The sixth home run of the year for the Little Chute, Wisconsin, native put momentum on the side of the WolfPack. A Casey Fountain single to plate Maddie Kvatek made it 7-0. After Waubonsee Community College (11-17) scored their first runs of the day in the top of the third to get within four, Joten added another RBI with a sacrifice fly in the home half. Three more runs in the fourth extended the advantage to 11-3 and included a run-scoring triple from Megan Miklesh and a RBI single by Katherine Brandl. Both teams scored again in the fifth, and following three more runs on three hits for the Chiefs, the 'Pack ended the game early with another walk-off moment for Fountain. Mia Noelker drove in Brandner for a 12-6 lead, and with two runners on and one out, Fountain's hard grounder up the middle was enough for Kvatek and Burg to score for the run-ruled win.

Joten finished with five runs batted in to match a career-best effort. Fountain and Brandl also drove in multiple runs with three and two, respectively. Fountain led the team with three hits and also scored two runs. Kvatek registered a pair of hits and a team-best three runs scored. Noelker and Miklesh also had two hits in the game.

Freshman Lauren Steien (6-1) earned her fifth consecutive win in as many starts after giving up six earned run on seven hits and a walk, while also fanning one.
