Sweep of Rock Valley College pushes WolfPack to top of N4C

Madison College hits back-to-back-to-back HRs, racks up 29 runs

ROCKFORD, ILL. - The Madison College baseball team was relentless at the plate on Saturday in taking both games of a North Central Community College Conference doubleheader at Rock Valley College. The WolfPack tallied 29 runs and four home runs - including back-to-back-tob-back - in picking up wins by scores of 17-5 and 12-9. The all-time series now stands at 37-22 in favor of the 'Pack after the two programs have split the last six meetings.

Game #1: Madison College 17, Rock Valley College 5 (7 innings)

Madison College scored at least one run in every inning of the day's first game en route to the team's second-highest run total in a game this season. The scoring surge started in a big way with freshman Zach Storbakken pounding a two-run homer to left for his team-leading seventh home run of the spring. In the second, Jake Fulton singled in Jake Nelson, while the third inning saw Gunnar Doyle, Spencer Bartel, and Nathan Ebersole all produce run-scoring hits. Eberole's was a double with the bases loaded that plated all three runs to push the scored to 8-1. Jake Nelson joined the RBI club in the fourth with a bunt single to plate Storbakken, whose misplayed ground ball to third in the fifth inning scored another run for a 10-2 advantage. Two more runs in the sixth resulted from a sac fly and a wild pitch ahead of a five-run seventh that made it a 12-run lead.

Three players compiled multiple hits, led by a 4 for 5 effort by Nelson. The Altoona, Illinois, native scored a career-high four runs and drove in another. Storbakken, a former Sussex Hamilton HS athlete, registered three runs scored and two batted in on a 3 for 5 day at the plate. Ebersole and Bartel tied for team-high honors with three RBI. Bartel, a product of Sun Prairie, Wisconsin, also crossed home two times.

Luke Hansel, a righthander from Caledonia, Wisconsin, improved ot 4-1 after allowing three earned runs on nine hits and a walk over his five innings. Dayne Louis entered to work the final two innings and held the Golden Eagles without a run or a hit, though he did walk three. The duo combined to strike out four batters.

Game #2: Madison College 12, Rock Valley College 9 (7 innings)

The WolfPack ran their streak of innings with a run scored to nine with two runs in the first and three more in the second. Gunnar Doyle picked up two RBI on two separate hits, while Gabe O'Brien produced two run on a single to right. Rock Valley College (8-24, 2-2) tallied two in the second inning to make it 5-3, which it stayed until fourth when the hosts took their first lead of the day with four runs on four hits against starter Alex Redman

Madison College (20-7, 5-1) answered with a seven-run top of the fifth, with all of the runs coming with two outs. Maguire Fitgerald got the rally going with a double to center, and scored two batters later when O'Brien ripped a double to right. Eduardo Saucedo's line drive single was enough for O'Brien to cross home and tie the game. After that is was all about the long-ball as the 'Pack jacked back-to-back-to-back home runs. Doyle opened the bombardment with a three-run blast to right that put the visitors ahead 10-7. Logan Mantz and Brady Jurgella followed with solo shots to right to make it 12-7. RVC got within three in the seventh before relief pitcher Justin Grosse closed the door.

Doyle, an Oak Creek, Wisconsin, native, finished with a career-high five RBI and a run scored as part of a 3 for 5 performance that included his first career homer. O'Brien, a former Eau Claire North HS athlete, also clubbed three hits, and generated three runs batted in and two scored. Storbakken was the third member of the three-hit club, and registered two runs and a RBI.

Redman (4-0) stayed perfect on the year with his fourth consecutive win after going six innings and allowing six earned run on seven hits and three walks. The lefty from New Berlin, Wisconsin, finished with eight strikeouts, matching a career-high. Grosse surrendered two runs, one of which was earned, on two hits and a walk, and fanned a pair, in his lone inning.
