MADISON, WISC. - Sunday's nine-inning affair between Region 4 foes Madison College and Morton College was dominated by the pitchers and scoreless through eight innings until a pair of Panthers runs earned the visitors a 2-0 win at
Robin Roberts Field. The setback snaps an 11-game win streak in the head-to-head series by the WolfPack, who still lead in the all-time count by a 19-6 margin.
Madison College (20-8) was able to put multiple runners on in several innings, however, was never able to come through with a clutch hit. In the third, Morton College (21-21) turned an inning-ending double play when the 'Pack had runners at the corners with one out. In the fourth,
Gabe O'Brien was thrown out at home trying to score from second on a
Brady Jurgella single to right, and the subsequent throw out at home provided the third out. Then in the eight, it was bases loaded and one out for the WolfPack, but
Gunnar Doyle grounded into a double play to end the threat.
Morton College came through in the visitor half of the ninth, using a single, a walk, and a double in three of the first four batters to drive in the game's only runs. The home team drew a leadoff walk to pinch hitter
Eduardo Saucedo to begin the bottom of the ninth, which came to a close on three consecutive fly outs.
Sophomore
Patrick Foldy got the start and worked 6 1/3 innings without allowing a run on two hits. The Colgate, Wisconsin, native walked five and struck out two.
Jett Thielke entered in relief and kept the Panthers at bay until the ninth. The righty struck out four, but surrendered two runs on two hits and two walks.Â
Madison College generated just four hits, with
Nathan Ebersole,
Zach Storbakken, Jurgella, and
Eli Kramer each producing one.
