GENEVA, ILL. - Following a one-day hiatus, the Madison College baseball team re-ignited its offense with two more double-digit scoring efforts that gives the WolfPack five such performances in the last five games. The visiting 'Pack defeated Kishwaukee College 12-1 and 13-5 in a Region 4 doubleheader on Monday. Madison College now boasts a 38-24-1 record in head-to-head games with the Kougars.
Game #1: #20 Madison College 12, Kishwaukee College 1 (5 innings)
The day's opening game belonged to freshman lefthander
Jacob Wilde, with some tremendous support from his offense. The former Waukesha West HS athlete was tagged for just one hit and an unearned run over five innings against the Kougars. He also recorded nine strikeout for the second straight start.
Meanwhile, the WolfPack bats jumped all over the Kishwaukee College pitching, starting with three runs in the first inning. A walk forced in the game's first run, which was followed by a
Logan Mantz sac fly and a run-producing ground out from
Brady Jurgella. Two innings later the lead escalated to 7-0 with three hits, two walks, and a wild pitch.
Eduardo Saucedo drove in a run with a single to right, and then scored on the wild pitch.
Spencer Bartel and
Ryan Hubley both had productive outs later in the frame. Two more runs in the fourth advanced the score to 9-1, while
Jake Fulton's grounder up the middle and Mantz' double to right plated three runs in the fifth to put it out of reach.
Mantz, a corner infielder from Slinger, Wisconsin, drove in a career-high three runs and scored another as the only WolfPack player with multiple hits. Saucedo, a product of Oregon, Wisconsin, used his lone hit for two RBI and a run scored.
Zach Storbakken, who leads the team in runs batted in, did drive in a run, but registered a career-best four runs scored.
Jake Fulton and
Jake Nelson each had two runs scored, as the top four batters in the order combine to score nine runs.
Game #2: #20 Madison College 13, Kishwaukee College 5 (7 innings)
Game two required the WolfPack to play from behind and rally for the win after Kishwaukee College (0-16) was first on the board in the first inning. Starter
Justin Grosse issued three free passes and two run-producing hits in the first inning to give the Kougars a 3-0 advantage. Madison College answered with two runs forced in on walks, part of five in the second inning, to get within a run. A two-run third by the Kougars gave the home team a 5-2 lead, however, it would be all WolfPack from there. They pulled even in the fourth with three runs on two hits, the last of which a RBI-single from
Kameron Laskowski. An eight-run fifth blew the game wide open as the visitors took full advantage of six hits, two of which were extra base hits by
Jake Nelson. The freshman infielder's first triple drove in
Brady Jurgella to start the big inning, and his second three-bagger cleared the bases to cap the scoring.
Nelson, an Altoona, Wisconsin, native, tied a career-high with five runs batted in and two runs scored on two hits and three walks. Laskowski also had two hits as the former Sussex Hamilton HS athlete produced two runs scored and two driven in. Madison College matched a season-best with eight steals, including three by Laskowski.
Coach
Mike Davenport used four arms in the finale against his former team. Grosse, a righty from Madison, Wisconsin, did not factor in the decision after going three innings and giving up five runs, three of which were earned, on three hits and two walks. He did strike out five batters.
Charlie Campbell (1-0) earned his first collegiate victory working two innings in relief. He struck out two batters and faced the minimum six.
Carson Fluno and
Dayne Louis combined to blank the Kougars over the final two innings with four combined K's.
