MADISON, WISC. - The Madison College men's basketball team started a busy stretch of six games in twelve days with a 74-59 win over in-state rival Western Technical College inside
H. Douglas Redsten Gymnasium Tuesday night. The win ended a brief two-game losing skid prior to the Thanksgiving break, and gives the WolfPack a 69-33 advantage in the all-time series that dates back to 1970-71.
Freshmen
Keith Hoffman and
Telin Porter each poured in 17 points to lead Madison College. Porter, a guard from Houston, Texas, set a new career-high in points with his fifth double-digit output that resulted from a 5 for 9 effort overall and a 7 for 10 performance at the free throw line. He also registered four rebounds, four steals, two assists, and a block in the win. Hoffman, a native of Stevens Point, Wisconsin, was 6 of 11 from the floor and 2 for 3 from long range, while also connecting on 3 of 4 free throws en route to his sixth game with at least ten points. The 6'8" forward also had a team-high nine rebounds, four steals, and a block.
Arrion Curothers and
Trevon Liggins each posted nine points, and
Ma'Teo Holland was tops with three assists.
Madison College got off to a fast start thanks to Hoffman, who tallied the team's first nine points, including a three-pointer that broke a 6-6 tie and ignited a 12-0 run. The WolfPack still owned a ten-point lead midway through the half, and later scored nine consecutive points to build a 34-15 edge with five minutes to play. Trailing 41-23 at the half, Western Technical College (1-6) opened with a 10-2 run to close the gap to ten. That push continued until it was a 45-38 just five minutes in, but that would be as close as it got as Madison College continually answered the bell when the Cavaliers put small runs together. An 8-0 run returned the differential to 15, and Western Tech went on to get as close as nine points on three different occasions before the 'Pack finished off the 15-point win.
The WolfPack took full advantage of a 24-16 differential in turnovers to score a 21-9 edge in points off turnovers. Madison College shot 23 of 61 (37%) overall and 4 of 17 (23%) from outside the arc, to go along with a season-high 24 made free throws on 38 (63%) attempts.
