The Madison College men's basketball team recorded back-to-back wins in a three-day span to mark the first wins of the 2021-22 season as they narrowly won 68-66 at Elgin Community College on Saturday, before securing an 86-80 victory over Rockford University JV in the home opener at
H. Douglas Redsten Gymnasium on Monday. Freshman
Keith Hoffman led the WolfPack in scoring in both games, averaging 21.0 points.
Saturday: Madison College 68, Elgin Community College 66
Madison College drained ten 3-pointers en route to taking down NJCAA Division IIÂ Elgin Community College (1-0) on their home floor, snapping a three-game losing streak against the Spartans and narrowing the all-time series to 3-7. The WolfPack converted 10 of 30 (33%) attempts from long range, and were 27 of 64 (42%) overall. The Spartans were only able to drain five of their 20 shots outside the arc, while also turning the ball over five more times.
Keith Hoffman, a 6'8" forward from Stevens Point, Wisconsin, led all scorers with a career-high 23 points. Hoffman had the long-distance shooting touch working, hitting 5 of 7 triples as part of a 9 for 16 effort overall. He also secured ten rebounds for his first career double-double.
First year guard
Telin Porter was the only other Madison College player to score in double figures with 11 points, including going 4 for 6 at the free throw line as the only member of the WolfPack to step to the charity stripe. The Houston, Texas, product also produced six rebounds, two assists, and two steals. Other scorers included
Nik Feller with nine points off bench, followed by eight points each from
Malcolm Reed and
Trevon Liggins.
Monday: Madison College 86, Rockford University JV 80
Madison College nearly led from start to finish in their home opener, and were able to hold off the Regents to win the first-ever meeting between the two programs. The WolfPack built a double-digit lead midway through the first half, however, the Rockford University JV battled back to take a slim lead before Madison College went ahead 44-41 at the half. The second half again saw the home team up by more than ten, only to see the Regents close to within five in the final minute.
Hoffman paced a more balanced WolfPack offensive attack with 19 points, six boards, and four assists. He connected on 8 of 15 shots with a pair of dunks and three 3-pointers. Freshman guard/forward
Nik Feller provided a major spark off the bench with a career-best 18 points, highlight by a 4 for 6 effort beyond the arc. The native of Poynette, Wisconsin, also had five rebounds and matched Hoffman for the team lead with four assists.
Guard
Telin Porter was a perfect 7 of 7 at the free throw line to account for half of his 13 points. Porter has reached double-figures in all three games so far this season. Sophomore
Malcolm Reed posted season-high's with a dozen points and five rebounds for the Barneveld, Wisconsin, native.
Madison College finished the game shooting 45.5% (30-66) from the field, 53% (9-17) from outside the arc, and took advantage of numerous trips to the free throw line with a 17 for 22 (77%) effort. They also tallied 20 assists and 15 steals.
