ROCKFORD, ILL. - Following back-to-back tough losses, the Madison College women's soccer team has responded with back-to-back convincing wins, the last of which was a 5-0 shutout of Rock Valley College on Saturday clinched at least a share of a fifth straight North Central Community College Conference championship. Freshman
Karmen Smyth tallied her first career hat trick to propel the WolfPack into position to secure the title outright with a win at the regular season finale on Saturday, October 16. The win completes a regular season sweep of the Golden Eagles, and evens up the all-time series at 8-8-1.
The match-up between last spring's N4C co-champions was immediately in control of the WolfPack, who scored a goal less than two minutes in. Sophomore All-American
Angelina Perez used a series of passes from freshmen Smyth and
Ashley Belk to register her team-leading 15th goal of the fall. Smyth and Perez flipped roles in the 14' when Perez set up the midfielder for her first goal of the match. The score differential reached 3-0 in the 22' on a successful kick from first year midfielder
Alexis Kulow. The sixth goal for the DeForest, Wisconsin, native, was assisted by Perez and Belk.
Still 3-0 into the second half against Rock Valley College (1-7, 0-3), Smyth completed her hat trick with consecutive goals in the 73' and 74'. Kulow picked up an assist on the first, with
Monica Tapia-Gutierrez doing the same on the last. Smyth, a native of Stoughton, Wisconsin, has racked up nine goals to rank second on the team and owns two multi-goal performances on the season.
Sophomore
Marin Stauffacher picked up her second shutout victory of the year and the second straight for the WolfPack. Stauffacher, a product of Columbus, Wisconsin, was credited with a pair of saves. Madison College bested RVC in total shots by a 14-2 margin and shots on goal by a 10-2 count.
