Late basket defeats WolfPack in back-and-forth N4C matchup

Newman's 17-point, 9-rebound effort led Madison College

GLEN ELLYN, ILL. - In a game that featured four ties and seven lead changes, it was the final two lead changes in the game's closing minute the handed the Madison College men's basketball team a heartbreaking 55-54 loss at the College of DuPage in a North Central Community College Conference game on Saturday. Shamar Newman's 17 points and career-high nine rebounds paced the WolfPack, who owned a one-point lead when the sophomore scored a go-ahead basket with 22 seconds remaining. The loss, which featured the WolfPack's lowest point total in a game this season, gives the Chaparrals their first regular season series sweep over the 'Pack since 2013-14, and narrows the all-time series to a 15-12 edge for Madison College.

The tightly-played contest saw the College of DuPage (7-19, 5-7) grab the first significant lead with a 6-0 run to break a 9-9 tie, however, the WolfPack answered and eventually went on top 18-16 with an Earl Lewis three-pointer with 7:35 to play in the half. Still ahead by one, Madison College committed four turnovers and missed its only two shots over the final four minutes of the first half to trail 27-22 at the break.Just over five minutes into the second half and the visitors had re-taken the lead, this time on a three-point play by Newman that was part of a quick 11-0 swing that includes long-range hits from Davion Washington and Lewis. The differential eventually reached seven points in favor of the visitors midway through the half, but within three minutes the game was tied at 47. Trailing 53-50 inside of 90 seconds, the WolfPack pulled within one a driving bucket by Lewis, and then took a 54-53 lead with Newman's final basket in the paint. Out of a timeout, the Chaparrals were able to score the game-winning shot from in the paint with four seconds remaining. Madison College's final attempt at the buzzer was a three from Washington that was unsuccessful.

Newman, a former Milwaukee Hamilton High School athlete, earned his 14th double-digit performance with a 6 for 12 showing from the floor and a perfect 5 for 5 effort at the free throw line. The forward/guard transfer from Central Lakes College (MN) also set a career-high with five steals, to go along with three assists and two blocks.

Lewis, a sophomore guard, hit 4 of 10 shots overall, 2 of 6 three-pointers, and 1 of 3 free throws to reach 11 points. It's the third straight game with ten or more points for the Madison-native, who also has nine such performances in the last 11 games.

Washington had a team-high six assists and finished with eight points.

Madison College shot 41% (20-48) overall, and made 5 of 14 (35.7%) three-pointers and 9 of 13 (69%) free throws. The WolfPack was outrebounded by a 33-23 margin, and committed 20 turnovers for just the eighth time this season. College of DuPage held narrow leads in points off turnovers (17-13) and second chance points (13-8). The WolfPack did own a 28-24 edge in points in the paint.

Madison College (12-13, 5-7) continues its regular season-ending three-game road trip on Wednesday, February 12 at N4C foe Triton College (22-5, 10-1). The Trojans, currently ranked #13 in the NJCAA Division I Poll, defeated the WolfPack by a 94-79 tally last month for their 20th straight win in the all-time series (26-2). Tip off in River Grove, Illinois, is at 7:00 p.m.
