WolfPack avenge earlier loss with ten-point win over Joliet JC

Stewart cans four 3-pointers to lead Madison College to fifth win in last six games

MADISON, WISC. - The Madison College women's basketball team posted a 3-1 record over a four-game homestand, which wrapped up Saturday at H. Douglas Redsten Gymnasium with an 89-79 North Central Community College Conference victory over Joliet Junior College. Sophomore Mrylena Stewart scored a career-best 21 points to lead four players in double-figures as the WolfPack avenged an 11-point road loss on January 2 in the N4C opener. The two programs split the regular season series for the second straight season, and for the eighth time in 11 years as conference foes. The win pushes the Madison College lead to 20-14 in the all-time series with the Wolves.

Joliet Junior College (9-15, 4-4) grabbed the early lead as they built a 17-3 advantage straight off the opening tip. The differential remained at ten entering the second quarter, which saw the WolfPack close to within a basket with less then six minutes remaining on a 13-2 run. The Wolves answered with eight consecutive points before the 'Pack tallied nine of the last 12 points to get within four points at the half. Back-to-back three-pointers to start the second half by sophomores Aniah Williams and Stewart quickly gave the home team their first lead of the day. Stewart drained consecutive long-range shots three minutes into the half that ultimately gave Madison College the lead for good as it triggered an 8-0 surge, which was followed by a 9-2 closing stretch that put the WolfPack up eight with ten minutes remaining. The fourth quarter saw the differential waver between seven and 11 points before ultimately ending with a ten-point decision.

Stewart finished four 3-pointers, marking the third time this season she has hit that many, and was 8 for 11 from the floor. The Madison-native now boasts six games with ten or more points, and also tied for team-high honors with six assists in the game.

Williams came off the bench to score all 17 of her points in the second half, going 6 for 14 overall with one triple and converting 4 of 7 free throws. She now stands at 945 career points.

Second year forward Lilly Dorman racked up 14 points on 6 of 11 shooting and a 2 for 3 effort at the stripe. The former Madison East High School athlete snapped a two-game stretch of single-digit scoring with her 11th game of ten or more points this season.

Freshman forward Olivia Marron contributed 11 points and a team-high seven rebounds in making her sixth start of the season. She canned 5 of 8 shots and one free throw en route to her seventh double-digit scoring performance in the last 12 outings. Amber Sue Udelhoven matched Marron on the glass with seven boards, while Julia Bruns dished out six assists to tie Stewart in that category. The starting duo combined for 13 points.

The 16 turnovers for Madison College is the third fewest in a game this season, and led to a 31-19 lead in points off turnovers. The WolfPack also owned a 52-30 edge in points in the paint despite Joliet Junior College's interior size advantage.
