MADISON, WISC. - Saturday afternoon was just one of those days when the ball doesn't go in the hole for the Madison College women's basketball team, who dropped a 68-49 North Central Community College Conference contest to NJCAA Division II Triton College at
H. Douglas Redsten Gymnasium. The WolfPack, whose three-game win streak came to an end, shot 28% from the floor for their second-lowest shooting percentage of the season, and saw only sophomore
Aniah Williams score in double-figures with 24 points. The setback is the second in the last three meetings with the Trojans, and narrows the all-time series to 18-4 in favor of the 'Pack.
Visiting Triton College (13-6, 3-1) ran out to an early lead scoring ten of the game's first 12 points, however, the WolfPack answered with a 9-2 surge to end the first quarter trailing by a narrow 17-14 margin. Madison College tied the game on a
Lilly Dorman jumper and briefly got out in front 22-21 with a Williams free throw a little more than three minutes into the second quarter. From that point on, the Trojans pulled away, using a 16-3 push and holding the home team without a basket for five minutes to close out the half with a 12-point advantage. The scoring drought carried on for nearly another four minutes as the differential stretched into the 20's during the third quarter before the 'Pack opened the fourth facing a 50-34 deficit and was never able to mount a comeback.
Madison College finished 16 of 57 (28%) overall, including a 5 for 22 (22.7%) effort from beyond the arc. They also committed 28 turnovers, which contributed to a 23-8 differential in points off turnovers. The Trojans were also better by a 40-18 margin in points in the paint and were plus-four in second chance points despite the home team being eight better on the glass.
Williams' 24 points came on 7 of 19 shooting that included a 2 for 8 mark from long range. The guard from Beloit, Wisconsin, did convert 8 of 11 at the free throw line en route to her eighth straight game with ten or more points, and her eighth game this season surpassing the 20-point plateau. Williams added five rebounds and two assists to her stat line.
Sophomore guard
Mrylena Stewart had eight points, and matched first year guard
Amber Sue Udelhoven for team-high honors with three assists. Dorman, a sophomore forward from Madison, Wisconsin, had a team-high nine rebounds, while freshman
Kyianna Baker reeled in eight boards.
