Late goals snaps scoreless start, not enough in loss to #9 Harper College

WolfPack remains winless ahead of MATC-Milwaukee match on Wednesday

PALATINE, ILL. - The Madison College men's soccer team was finally able to snap their scoreless start to the 2019 season, however, Saturday's late goal against Harper College was not enough to overcome a 5-1 loss. The WolfPack trailed by five goals in the North Central Community College Conference match when Pablo Guzman converted a penalty kick in the last four minutes. The Hawks, who entered the game ranked #9 in the NJCAA Division III Poll, have taken four straight games against the 'Pack, and now boast a 16-8-1 advantage in the all-time series.

Scoreless for the first 20 minutes, Harper College (4-0, 4-0) put a shot past sophomore Saxon LaFlash to give the Hawks a first half lead in the 21'. Four minutes later it was an unassisted goal for the home team that made it 2-0. Still a two-goal differential to start the second half, Harper College added goals in the 49', 54', and 76' to get comfortably ahead by a 5-0 tally.

In the late stages of the match, Guzman, a freshman midfielder from Delavan, Wisconsin, was awarded a penalty kick and took advantage to net his first collegiate goal in the 87'. The goal was also the first of the season for the WolfPack, who had played 486 consecutive minutes without finding the back of the net in 2019.

The Hawks put pressure on the WolfPack back line with a 16-9 edge in shots, including a 9-5 disparity in shots on goal. First year players Samuka Toure, Bobby Urey, and Jheison Garcia each had two shots, with Urey putting both of his on goal.

LaFlash, a former Madison Memorial High School athlete, recorded four saves in the losing effort.
