Eighth inning rally nets WolfPack ninth straight win

Winners of 17 of their last 18, Madison College off Wednesday before hosting MVCC Thursday

MADISON, WISC. - Playing their sixth game in four days, the Madison College baseball team struggled to find some life Tuesday in their nine-inning game with Region IV opponent the College of Lake County at Robin Roberts Field. Luckily, the switch was flipped on just in the nick of time, as the WolfPack erased a three-run deficit with a six-run inning to pull out a 6-5 victory over the Lancers. The 'Pack, who are now receiving votes in the latest NJCAA Division II Poll, have now won nine straight games and 17 of their last 18, while also boosting their all-time mark with Lake County to 27-4.

The Lancers were able to get to Madison College starter Brandon Komar for a run in each of the first two innings, both of which began with lead-off walks. The score reached 3-0 in the sixth when a run scored on a wild pitch for the second time.

With desperation beginning to set in, the WolfPack went to work. Back-to-back singles by sophomore catcher Lucas Trebian and freshman first baseman Luke Malmanger led to a pitching change for College of Lake County (14-16). Trebian would score on a single from first year infielder Derek Lee, and a bases loaded hit by pitch forced in the second run.

Following a second pitching change, sophomore outfielder Adam LaRock came through with the day's biggest hit, a two-run single on a ground ball up the middle to allowed Carl Valk and Walker Jenkins to touch home for a 4-3 WolfPack advantage. The home team wasn't quite done. Nathan Aide and Trebian registered successive two-out singles to center that each drove in a run to extend the lead to 6-3.

The insurance runs would come in handy as the drama continued into the top of the ninth. A pair of walks put two runners on with two outs and forced coach Mike Davenport to turn to his bullpen, bringing in freshman Eliot Turnquist. The second pitch he threw was driven to right field and scored two runs to narrow the gap to one. After yet another walk put the go-ahead run on base, Turnquist got the third batter he faced to hit ground ball to first baseman Jarrett Schelk, who tossed to Turnquist covering at first for the final out.

Jenkins, Trebian, and Malmanger each finished with two hits to lead the WolfPack. Jenkins, a Sun Prairie, Wisconsin, native, and Trebian, a native of Madison, Wisconsin, each had a RBI and a run scored. LaRock, a transfer from NCAA Division I University of Iowa, had a team-high two runs batted in.

Komar, a former Elkhorn High School athlete, struck out seven batters over seven innings, but was tagged for three earned runs on two hits, three walks, a hit batter, and two wild pitches. Scheelk (1-0) earned his first collegiate win, pitching an inning and two-thirds in relief. He allowed two runs on a hit and three walks with one K. Turnquist picked up his fourth save of the season, with all four coming during the last 11 games.
