WolfPack sweep rival Stormers behind three-hitter in opener

Madison College pitchers hold MATC-Milwaukee to one run, seven hits in two wins

OAK CREEK, WISC. - A quartet of first year arms shouldered the load Tuesday as the Madison College baseball team held long-time in-state rival Milwaukee Area Technical College to just one run over two games in a North Central Community College Conference doubleheader sweep. The WolfPack tossed a three-hit shutout to take the opener 5-0, and followed with a four-hit effort to win 8-1 in the nightcap. Winners of three straight on the season and against the Stormers, the 'Pack is now 93-18 in the all-time series.

Game #1: Madison College 5, Milwaukee Area Technical College 0 (7 innings)

A walk, a double, and an error allowed Madison College to grab an early 1-0 lead in the top of the first inning. Freshman starter Andy Neu maintained the one-run advantage by scattering hits in the first, second, and fourth innings. The WolfPack made it 2-0 in the fifth when Walker Jenkins followed a Carl Valk base hit with a single to center. After issuing a pair of walks in the home half of the fifth, Neu was replaced by Eliot Turnquist, who promptly induced an inning-ending double play before next six batters faced to close out the win. Madison College added some insurance in the seventh. Three straight singles loaded the bases for Nick Gile, whose sacrifice fly to left plated Derek Lee. Jarrett Scheelk's single cleared the remaining runners to make it 5-0.

Neu (1-0), a lefthander from Kewaskum, Wisconsin, earned his first collegiate victory after blanking the Stormers on three hits and three walks in his four-plus innings of work. He finished with six strikeouts. Turnquist picked up his second save of the season, tossing two and two-thirds innings of perfect baseball with three K's.

At the dish, Jenkins finished 3 for 4, scoring one run and driving in another. Valk used a 2 for 3 effort to touch home three times, while Scheelk paced the team with two RBI.

Game #2: Madison College 8, Milwaukee Area Technical College 1 (7 innings)

The WolfPack again seized the early advantage in the finale, this time putting up a pair of runs in the first half inning. Milwaukee Area Technical College (10-12, 0-2) got one run back as an error by first year third baseman Derek Lee allowed the Stormers to tally their lone run of the day. It remained a one-run game through the fourth before the 'Pack put up five runs in the fifth. Walker Jenkins singled in Pierson Gibis after the freshman led off the inning with a line drive single to center. Two walks later and the bases were loaded for Jarrett Scheelk, who blasted a grand slam over the fence in left for a 7-1 lead. The grand slam is the second in the last four games for the WolfPack.

Patrick Foldy, a freshman from Sussex Hamilton High School, struck out seven batters, allowed four hits, and surrendered one unearned run in six innings on the hill to improve to 3-1 on the season. The righthander has now won each of his last three starts. Jackson Brown, another first year righty from Oconomowoc, Wisconsin, picked up two strikeouts as he worked a four-batter final inning.
