Game Recap: Women's Basketball |

Slow start not enough to hold WolfPack from third straight win

Pair of double-doubles aid in second half separation

CHICAGO, ILL. - Playing their first competitive game in just over ten days, the Madison College women's basketball team had to overcome a sluggish start to eventually get by Wilbur Wright College with a 73-55 road win in North Central Community College Conference action on Wednesday. The WolfPack's third consecutive win featured double-doubles by sophomores Shaquita Lee and Caitlyn Gilbertson, while freshmen Aniah Williams was the top scorer for fifth consecutive game. The victory also marked the 11th straight in the head-to-head series with the Rams, which stands at 14-1 in favor of Madison College.

Madison College trailed 9-2 after the game's first two minutes, and after a 7-1 run closed the game to a single point, Wilbur Wright College (11-10, 2-4) closed the opening quarter by scoring eight of the last ten points to take an 18-11 lead. The differential grew to as high as nine in favor of the Rams until the 'Pack found their scoring touch. A pair of Williams' three's keyed a surge that saw first year guard Tyra Day even the score on her own three-pointer with two minutes left in the half. A Williams layup to open the second half gave the WolfPack their first lead since scoring the first points of the game. Madison College slowly pulled away throughout the third quarter as they outscored WWC 24-13. The home team tried to rally in the fourth, closing the gap to six points with less than six minutes remaining; however, the 'Pack finished the game with a 12-0 run that included a 7 of 12 effort at the free throw line.

Williams finished with a team-high 22 points on 9 of 16 shooting, which included four makes from long range. Her tenth 20-plus game in the last 13 outings was accompanied by nine rebounds to match a career-high and narrowly miss her first career double-double.

Lee's second career double-double featured 21 points and ten rebounds. The Madison, Wisconsin, native finished 9 for 21 from the field with one triple and two free throws. She also collected a team-leading six assists and three steals during her fifth 20-plus scoring game.

Gilbertson, a product of Belmont High School, dropped in season-high 16 points as she hit 50% of her shots with a 4 for 8 performance. The 5'10" forward also buried 8 of 10 free throws and tied a career-best mark with 14 rebounds. In addition, Gilbertson led the 'Pack with a pair of rejections.

Overall, Madison College made 27 of 66 field goal attempts (41%), 6 of 16 (37%) three-point tries, and 13 of 22 (59%) free throws. Wilbur Wright finished 21 of 72 (29%) overall, 3 of 23 (13%) from distance, and 10 for 19 (52%) at the charity stripe. The visitors also owned a 54-44 edge in total rebounds and a 15-3 advantage in second chance points.
