MADISON, WISC. - The Madison College women's basketball team was unable to loosen Rock Valley College's stranglehold on the rest of the North Central Community College Conference as they fell 89-76 on Monday inside H. Douglas Redsten Gymnasium. Guards
Shaquita Lee and
Aniah Williams combined for 49 points, however, it wasn't enough against the balanced #4 Golden Eagles, who outright claimed their ninth consecutive league crown. The WolfPack saw their five-game win streak come to a close and were swept in the regular season series against RVC for the third straight year.
Rock Valley College (21-5, 12-0) owned a 22-17 lead following the first quarter, but the WolfPack opened the second quarter with a 7-2 run to make it a one-point game. From that point on, the two rivals exchanged scoring bursts until the Golden Eagles scored the final three points of the highly-competitive second quarter to lead 39-33 at the half. In the third, Williams scored 11 points in the first five minutes to even the game at 48-all. However, RVC closed the quarter with 14 of the final 17 points to take a double-digit advantage into the final ten minutes, where it stayed a ten-point lead or higher for the remainder of the game.
Sophomore and former Madison West High School standout
Shaquita Lee paced the WolfPack offense with 26 points, including XX in the first quarter. Lee, who now has seven games with 20 or more points since the calendar turned to 2019, made 11 of 22 shots overall and a team-high three 3-pointers. The 5'8" guard also was tops on the 'Pack with nine rebounds, a career-high nine steals, and five assists as she narrowly missed her first career triple-double.
Williams connected on 11 of 29 field goal attempts, but struggled from long range with a 1 for 10 performance. The Beloit, Wisconsin, native has surpassed the 20-point mark in 12 of the last 16 games.Â
Three other players scored eight points in the contest for the WolfPack, who are now 18-22 all-time against RVC.Â
Madison College finished 35 of 82 (42%) from the floor, made 5 of 20 (23%) attempts beyond the arc, and was just 1 for 6 (16%) at the free throw line. The Golden Eagles controlled the glass by a 51-33 margin, including 22 offensive rebounds that led to a 28-15 edge in second chance points.
