SLAM DUNK: WolfPack start 2-0 with emphatic win over McHenry County

Five players score in double figures as Madison College hits 100 points in second straight game

MADISON, WISC. - The Madison College men's basketball team displayed a bevy of offensive weapons Tuesday night as they ran away from NJCAA Division II McHenry County College to post a 104-81 win in the home opener at H. Douglas Redsten Gymnasium. Five players all scored in double-figures to help the WolfPack reach triple-digits on the scoreboard for their second straight win, while also improving to 4-1 in the all-time series with the Scots after four straight wins since 2016.

Trailing 7-6 early, Madison College grabbed the lead for good with an Allen Robinson three-pointer that sparked a 9-0 run. The WolfPack buried a barrage of long-range shots over a seven-minute stretch, including a Dayton Coleman splash that gave the home team its first double-digit advantage. Freshman Marcus Kartes demonstrated his marksmanship from beyond the arc in the first half, hitting nothing but net on all four attempts, including a transition three from the corner as the first half clock was winding down that gave the 'Pack a 57-41 lead at the half.

The second half started with sophomore Shamar Newman putting on an aerial display as part of a rousing 10-0 surge that handed Madison College a 21-point lead. The Milwaukee, Wisconsin, native, who had one break-away dunk in the first half, came soaring for a put-back slam of a Robinson miss, and then followed a Robinson triple with another poster-worthy dunk on a MCC defender for a three-point play (see highlight video in story image above). The second half advantage peaked at 26 on another Newman bucket to make it 80-54 near the midway point of the half, and stayed above the 20-point mark as the WolfPack coasted to the win.

Freshman forward Jason Williams put in another solid night of work with a near double-double of 20 points and nine rebounds. The Evansville, Indiana, product went 8 for 14 from the floor and hit 4 of 5 free throws, while also picking up four offensive boards.

Newman and Robinson each registered career-high's with 17 points. Newman, a transfer from Central Lakes College (MN), was nearly perfect from the floor as he converted 7 of 8 shots and pulled in five rebounds. Robinson, a freshman from Goose Creek, South Carolina, hit two of his five buckets from long range, and also went 5 for 5 at the stripe with four rebounds.

Coleman and Kartes tallied a dozen points each, with Kartes, a former Milwaukee Rufus King High School athlete, getting all of his on the four first half 3-pointers, and Coleman, a native of Champaign, Illinois, knocking down 5 of 8 shots overall with two from distance.

Sophomore Davion Washington, who led the team with 29 points on Saturday, scored three points, but dished out a career-high 12 assists and reeled in nine rebounds to match Williams for team-high honors.

Madison College shot 46.9% overall (38-81), went 9 for 22 (40.9%) from outside the arc, and hit on 19 of 26 (73.1%) free throws. The home team secured a 25-7 edge in points off turnovers thanks to a 10-18 edge in miscues.
