Competitive game ends in WolfPack setback to Lake County

Robinson leads quartet of double-figure scorers, Williams secures second double-double

MADISON, WISC. - In a game that featured five ties and seven lead changes, the Madison College men's basketball team was unable to finish a late rally in taking a 94-87 loss inside H. Douglas Redsten Gymnasium on Tuesday against NJCAA Division II College of Lake County. Four WolfPack players reach double-digits in the scoring column, led by freshman Allen Robinson's 19 points and Jason Williams' second double-double of the season. The Lancers remain unbeaten in six all-time meetings against the 'Pack as the head-to-head series resumed after a five-year hiatus.

The College of Lake County (5-1) used a 12-1 run in the game's first four minutes, and still owned a 12-point advantage with just over ten minutes remaining in the half. The WolfPack answered with a nine-point swing to make it a one possession game, and four minutes later, sophomore Shamar Newman drained a three that pulled the 'Pack within a point. Two possessions later it was freshman Jason Williams scoring in the paint to hand the home team its first lead of the game. After a successful CLC bucket, Robinson was fouled in the back court with the clock winding down and converted the second of two free throws to send the game to halftime even at 42-42.

The second half brought three ties and five lead changes, with Madison College seizing the first wave of momentum with a 9-2 burst to start the half. However, the Lancers countered with ten consecutive points until Kyle Nett paused the run with a game-tying triple that was answered by eight more points for the visitors. The 'Pack was not done yet and scored a 12-2 surge capped by a Marcus Kartes wing three for a 73-72 lead with just over seven minutes to play. Even at 78-all under the five-minute mark, the Lancers pulled away with an 11-2 run. but Madison College had one last punch left to throw tallied five quick points. A Davion Washington lay up with :21 remaining made it 91-87, but CLC converted 3 of 4 free throws to close out the road win and had the 'Pack a fourth straight loss.



Robinson logged 29 minutes in a reserve role, and despite missing all six of his three-point tries, finished 7 of 20 overall and 5 of 7 at the line for 19 points. The Goose Creek, South Carolina, native has scored 17 or more points in five straight games, and also added five rebounds, one assist, and a steal.

Williams and Washington each scored 14 points, with Williams also pulling down a team-high ten rebounds to complete the double-double. The Evansville, Indiana, product converted 7 of 13 shots for, secured four offensive boards, and collected one assist, one steal, and one block. Washington, a native of Madison, Wisconsin, made 7 of 14 attempts, and had six rebounds, while leading the team with four steals and three assists. Both players now boast four games with double-digit scoring.

Kartes, a freshman from Milwaukee, Wisconsin, hit a pair of three-pointers as part of a 4 for 6 effort overall with one free throw to reach 11 points before fouling out late in the game. Through five games he leads the team with a dozen 3-pointers and a 46.2% from beyond the arc.

Madison College was a better interior scoring team by a 48-34 margin, and owned a 16-14 edge in second chance points. The Lancers posted a 24-18 lead in points off turnovers.

Madison College (3-4) is back on the road Thursday, November 21 at NJCAA Division II Waubonsee Community College (2-2). The WolfPack won the last contest between the two programs in the 2007-08 season opener, but trail the all-time series by a 7-1 count. Tip off is at 7:30 p.m. in Sugar Grove, Illinois.
