SUGAR GROVE, ILL. - Staring up at a 22-point halftime deficit, the Madison College men's basketball team exploded for a huge come-from-behind win Thursday as they defeated NJCAA Division II Waubonsee Community College by a 108-95 final. The win stops a four-game losing streak and marks the WolfPack's fifth game with 100 or more points this season. The 'Pack had five players score in double-figures, led by a career-high 33 points from freshman
Allen Robinson, en route to their second straight win in nine all-time meetings with the Chiefs. The two teams had not played since 2007-08.
In a tale of two halves, Waubonsee Community College (2-3) owned most of the first half, beginning with a 17-9 run that turned a two-point WolfPack lead into a 28-18 advantage for the home team. That differential continued to climb to as high as 25 with 2:21 left to play in the half as the Chiefs outscored the visitors by a 27-13 count over the final ten minutes of the half. That all did a complete flip in the second half with the 'Pack using scoring runs of nine, seven, and 12 to fight back into the game by the midway mark of the half. After Robinson buried a jumper to pull within two inside of the nine minute mark, freshman forward
Jason Williams scored an inside bucket 20 seconds later to even the score and setup
Shamar Newman's go-ahead basket one possession after to make it 79-77. Madison College never looked back after that, although the game remained in doubt with the visitors ahead by one inside of four minutes remaining. From that point on, the WolfPack closed out the game and the win with a 21-9 scoring differential.
Robinson hit a career-best four 3-pointers and went 13 of 22 from the field with three free throws for a career-high 33 points. The transfer from NAIA Columbia International University (SC) has reached double-figures in six straight games and is averaging a team-high 19.3 points per game. Robinson joins sophomore guard
Davion Washington as the only two players this season with 30-point scoring games.
Fellow transfer
Shamar Newman racked up his own career-best 22 points on 8 of 14 shooting and 6 of 9 at the stripe, while the Milwaukee, Wisconsin, native also secured a team-high nine rebounds.
Freshman
Jason Williams enjoyed a 19-point, seven-rebound, and four-assist performance, with fellow first year forward
Malcolm Reed right behind with 14 points, seven rebounds, four assists, and six steals. Off the bench, freshman guard
Dayton Coleman filled the stat sheet with ten points, eight rebounds, and a team-leading - and career-high - seven assists. Madison College had a season-best 28 assists with five players registering four or more.
Madison College shot 31% (14-45) in the first half and 75% (28-37) in the second half, which also featured a 15 for 22 effort at the free throw line over the final 20 minutes. The WolfPack claimed a 52-35 differential in rebounds and turned 19 offensive boards into a 13-8 edge in second chance scoring. The visitors were also plus-20 in the points in the paint column.
