GALESBURG, ILL. - A five-minute scoring drought in the first half Saturday proved costly for the Madison College men's basketball team in an 80-60 loss at Carl Sandburg College that concluded a four-game road trip. Guards
Allen Robinson and
Earl Lewis were the only WolfPack players to score in double-figures as the 'Pack extended their current losing streak to three straight games after starting the season 3-0. The undefeated Chargers have defeated Madison College in all three meetings in the head-to-head series.
Madison College trailed 12-11 after sophomore
Davion Washington completed a three-point play with a successful free throw just over five minutes into the game. The WolfPack would not score again for another five-and-a-half minutes when second year forward/guard
Shamar Newman scored in the paint to end an 11-0 run for Carl Sandburg College (5-0). The Chargers continued to slowly build their lead in the first half to as high as 26 points before the 'Pack cut it to 48-28 at the break. Following six consecutive points to start the second half for the home team, Madison College fought hard to close the gap to 13 as Lewis buried a three straight shots from beyond the arc during an 11-0 surge with less than six minutes remaining. Unfortunately, that's as close as the WolfPack would get, and Carl Sandburg tallied 18 of the final 29 points.
Robinson converted 7 of 17 shots, but struggled from distance with a 1 for 6 effort from three-point territory en route to 18 points. The South Carolina native also made 3 of 4 free throws, while registering two assists, one rebound, and one block.
Lewis, a Madison, Wisconsin, native, scored a career-best 15 points, with all of it coming from long range. The 6'1" shooting guard drained 5 of 9 outside the arc to pick up his second consecutive double-digit scoring effort.
Newman and freshman
Jason Williams tied for team-high honors with six rebounds and combined for eight points. Sophomore guard
Davion Washington had three points, four boards, and a team-leading four assists.
Madison College committed 22 turnovers, their second highest total of the season, and it led to a 24-7 disadvantage in points off turnovers. The WolfPack also trailed 40-18 in points in the paint, while second chance scoring was nearly even at 12-11 in favor of the visitors.
