WolfPack move on to semifinals with sweep of Elgin

Borchert, Walgurski key quarterfinal win with 18 kills, five blocks

MADISON, WISC. - For the 11th consecutive year, the Madison College women's volleyball team will appear in the Region IV Division III Tournament semifinals after Wednesday's 3-0 quarterfinal sweep of Elgin Community College in the final home match at H. Douglas Redsten Gymnasium this season. The #2 WolfPack used set scores of 25-22, 25-13, and 25-21 to eliminate the #7 Spartans, whom they have swept in four straight matches. The win also moves the 'Pack above .500 on the season for the first time since they started the season 1-0 with a 3-0 win over Elgin.

Madison College jumped out to a 12-4 lead in the opening set, and still led 19-12 when Elgin Community College (3-16-1) called a timeout and began a rally that narrowed the gap to 23-21. Two points later, freshman Olivia Marron finished off the set win with light touch above the net that dropped in for the kill. The Spartans took the early advantage in the second set, but the 'Pack rattled off six straight points to regain control. The home team slowly pulled away and won six of the last seven points to put it away. The final set was closely played throughout, with Madison College grabbing a 19-16 lead on a Calla Borchert kill. However, the Spartans would not go down without a fight and rattled off five of the next six points to take a one-point lead late. Following a time out, the WolfPack regrouped and finished off the sweep with a five-point run to win the match.

Freshmen middle blockers Calla Borchert and Sidni Walgurski was catalysts in the win. The 6'0" Borchert, a native of Lake Mills, Wisconsin, hammered nine kills, registered a .250 hitting effeciency, and posted five blocks for the third time this season. Walgurski, also 6'0", but from Green Bay, Wisconsin, matched the kills total with nine of her own. Hitting at a .583 clip, she has now been at .500 or better in three straight matches and eight matches overall.

Freshmen setters Lena La Fleur and Skyler Salter both reached double-figures in assists with 17 and 11, respectively. La Fleur, a product of Mt. Horeb High School, has not had 17 assists in a match since recording 22 helpers against the College of DuPage on September 4. She also served up three aces, including the final point of the match.

Defensively, freshman Jaidyn Lange notched 14 digs for her fifth double-digit digs effort in the last seven matches. Sophomore Cathleen Flannery was right behind with 13 digs.

Madison College had 35 kills with a .218 attack percentage, to go along with nine aces, nine blocks, 33 assists, and 43 digs. They improve to 6-1 all-time against Elgin Community College.
