ROCKFORD, ILL. - The Madison College women's volleyball team picked a bad time struggle offensively as their 2019 season came to a close Saturday with a 3-1 loss to Rock Valley College in the
Region IV Division III Tournament Semifinals. The #2 WolfPack held off the #3 and host Golden Eagles with an impressive third set, but ultimately fell by scores of 25-20, 25-20, 8-25, and 25-12. Madison College finishes the regular season with a .500 record of 16-16, marking their first non-winning season since 2003. Rock Valley College advanced to the Region IV Championship Match and lost in three sets to #1 Harper College, who advances as the Region IV champion to the
2019 NJCAA Division III Women's Volleyball Championships in Rochester, Minnesota, from November 14-16.
The WolfPack hit a .000 attack percentage for the match, totaling just 26 kills and never reaching double-digit kills in any of the four sets played. Sets two and four saw the 'Pack finish with more attack errors than kills, and thus, posting negative hitting efficiencies in each. The third set saw Madison College generate an impressive .350 mark with eight kills and just one attack error. They also had seven aces, seven blocks, 22 assists, and 55 digs for the match.
Freshman middle blocker
Calla Borchert was selected to the Region IV Division III All-Tournament team after generating a team-leading ten kills on 18 attempts with just two errors for a team-best .444 attack percentage. The 6'0" native of Lake Mills, Wisconsin, finishes the season with four double-digit kill performances and led all hitters with a .335 percentage. Borchert also had a pair of service aces and two blocks, giving her a team-high 70.0 blocks on the season.
Sophomore outside hitter
Cathleen Flannery had seven kills to give the Green Bay, Wisconsin, native 233 kills on the season and lead the team in the category.
Freshman setter
Skyler Salter amassed 12 assists for her ninth match with ten or more, including five straight matches and seven the last eight to end the season. The former Milton High School athlete also matched Borchert with a couple of aces in the match.
Two freshmen,
Amelia Walton and
Jaidyn Lange, paced the defensive back row with 12 and 11 digs, respectively. Walton, an alum of Verona Area High School, now boasts a dozen matches with double-digits digs, while Lange had seven. Walton also finished the year tops in digs for the WolfPack with 258.
Rock Valley College (20-22) took two of three matches against the WolfPack this season, and has won five of the last seven meetings to increase its lead in the all-time series to 41-28-1. Madison College is 4-3 in postseason contests with the Golden Eagles.
