Second half rally secures double OT tie for WolfPack

Herrera scores both goals as the sophomore closes in on season scoring record

MADISON, WISC. - For the second consecutive match, the Madison College men's soccer team required more than the standard 90 minutes of play to try and determine a winner. Unfortunately, the WolfPack had to settle for a 2-2 tie with Joliet Junior College in a North Central Community College Conference match on Wednesday at Irwin A. & Robert D. Goodman Pitch-East. The 'Pack's first tie of the season moves the all-time series record for Madison College to 7-12-3.

Joliet Junior College (3-6-2, 0-5-2) took a 1-0 lead with an unassisted goal against first year goalkeeper Saxon LaFlash less than 20 minutes into the game. The visitors followed it up with a second goal late in the half to take a 2-0 edge into the locker room.

Madison College played more aggressive soccer in the second half and it paid off. Sophomore Dejesus Herrera pulled the 'Pack within a goal with a 54' strike. Then, with less than ten minutes remaining, the former Madison West HS standout converted a pass from freshman Nikolas Schebig with a header near the left post for the equalizer. The goals were Herrera's 14th and 15th of the season, leaving him four goals shy of tying the program record for goals in a season. The assist marked the first career helper for Schebig, a native of Verona, Wisconsin.

The score remained even through regulation, and both teams had opportunities to end in overtime. LaFlash made consecutive saves on one play in the first overtime, including one atop the goalline, to keep the Wolves at bay. Meanwhile, the duo of Brandon Griffin and Shaah Kanhialal both had looks at a scoring opportunity late in the second OT, but the ball caromed wide right on the play.

LaFlash finished with five saves as he started and played the entire match for the first time in six outings.

In trying to make up for a sluggish start that saw JJC attempt twice as many shots as the home team through the first 45 minutes, the WolfPack finished with a 24-20 advantage in total shots and a 15-10 lead in shots on goal.

While the tie ends a five-match winning streak, it does extend the WolfPack's current streak of matches without a loss to six.

Up Next:

Madison College (7-2-1, 4-1-1) has four matches remaining in the regular season, with half of them coming against N4C foe Harper College (5-4-2, 4-4-1). The WolfPack conclude a three-game homestand on Friday, September 28 by taking on the Hawks at Irwin A. & Robert D. Goodman Pitch-East. The all-time series favors Harper College by a 12-8-1 margin, however, the 'Pack are coming off a sweep of the 2017 regular season series, marking the first time they accomplished that feat since 2013. Kickoff for the penultimate home game of the season is set for 6:00 p.m.
