Herrera's second goal lifts WolfPack in overtime

Season-long win streak reaches five with dramatic home win

MADISON, WISC. - Nothing was settled after 90 minutes of soccer on Sunday at Irwin A. & Robert D. Goodman Pitch-East, but a successful penalty kick in the first overtime lifted the Madison College men's soccer team to a 4-3 win over Anoka-Ramsey Community College (MN). Sophomore Dejesus Herrera converted the game-winning kick to send the WolfPack to their fifth consecutive win, the program's longest win streak since the 2016 season.

The home team got out to a fast start against the Golden Rams, scoring two goals in the first 16 minutes of action. Second year forward Shane Paterson knocked home an Abel Araya pass to make it 1-0 in the 10', which was followed by an unassisted score by freshman Jonas Luskey-Sanders just six minutes later. The Paterson goal marked the season of the season for the Catterick Garrison, England, native, while Luskey-Sanders, a former Madison East HS athlete, netted his first career goal.

Anoka-Ramsey (4-6) lessened the differential with their first goal in the 24', however, Herrera put the 'Pack back up two at 3-1 with his first goal of the match in the 40'. When halftime rolled around it was a 3-2 contest, a score that remained as such until the 85' when ARCC tallied the equalizer and forced overtime.

In the extra session, the Golden Rams missed wide on their one-and-only shot attempt before the foul was committed on Herrera. The native of Madison, Wisconsin, took full advantage with a low kick just beyond the outstretched arms of the goalkeeper and inside the left post to secure the win. Herrera now boasts a team-high 13 goals.

First year Msughter Abel Dzoho started the game in goal, making two saves and allowing two goals. Fellow freshman Saxon LaFlash entered at halftime and came up with one save and one goal allowed in the second half and overtime.

The two teams combined for 28 total shots and 17 shots on goal, as well as ten corner kicks and ten saves.

The all-time series now stands even at a win each after ARCC picked up a three-goal decision in the lone prior meeting in 2013.
