JOLIET, ILL. - Three weeks after the Madison College men's soccer team was schedule to open the 2018 season with a road contest against Joliet Junior College, the two teams finally met on Friday in a North Central Community College Conference match won by the WolfPack, 2-1. The match, originally scheduled for August 24 before wet conditions forced a postponement, ended a two-game road trip for the 'Pack with back-to-back wins for the second time this season. Madison College is now 7-12-2 all-time against the Wolves, with five of the wins coming in the last seven meetings.
The WolfPack and Wolves were locked in a scoreless tussle through most of the first half, with Joliet (2-5-1, 0-4-1) controlling most of the action. The home team attempted seven shots and two corner kicks to just one shot and zero corner kicks for Madison College when freshman
Nikolas Schebig broke through for a score off a
Will Hamilton assist in the 38' to put the 'Pack in front. For Schebig, a Verona, Wisconsin, native, the scoring strike was the first of his career, while Hamilton, a sophomore defender, leads the team with three assists.
Still leading by a goal as the second half began, Madison College netted the game-winner not long after the whistle blew to start the action. Sophomore midfielder/forward from Tucker, Georgia,
Brandon Griffin, converted a
Dejesus Herrera pass for his third goal of the season in the 47' to make it a 2-0 advantage.
The score remained that way for the next 20 minutes before the Wolves were able to put one past freshman goalkeeper
Msughter Abel Dzoho to make it 2-1. However, the 'Pack defense held the home team to four shots and a pair of corner kicks over the final 20-plus minutes to close out the win. Dzoho, a native of Makurdi, Nigeria, posted eight saves over 88 minutes in his first career start.
Overall, Joliet recorded a 17-6 edge in total shots and a 9-4 differential in shots on goal, but it wasn't enough as the WolfPack improved to 3-1 in the N4C.
