WolfPack soar past Eagles behind Herrera's four-goal effort

Madison College races out to 5-0 lead at halftime to extend winning streak to three

MADISON, WISC. - A good portion of Sunday's first half against NJCAA Region IV opponent Illinois Valley Community College looked as though Dejesus Herrera could not be stopped. The sophomore finished with four goals to help the Madison College men's soccer team to a 7-0 shutout over the Eagles at Irwin A. & Robert D. Goodman Pitch-East. The WolfPack improved to 5-0 all-time against IVCC and pushed their current win streak to a season-best three matches.

The match wasn't even 12 minutes old when the Madison, Wisconsin, native and University of Charleston transfer tallied his first career hat trick. Herrera converted a Will Hamilton pass to open the scoring in the 7', then quickly followed with another scoring strike off an assist from Logan Carstens. The hat trick came when the second year forward beat two defenders and the goalkeeper with a cross-body kick.

Sophomore Brandon Griffin, who assisted on that third goal, quickly followed with a tally of his own that was set up by Herrera. Freshman Eder Lavariega made it 5-0 in the 39' thanks to an Abel Araya pass for his first career goal.

In the second half, Herrera became the fifth player in program history to score four goals in a game, giving Carstens his second assist on the day. Griffin added his name to the multi-goal game list with a successful penalty kick in the 58' to cap the scoring.

Madison College attempted 23 shots and put 13 on goal, compared to just three total shots by Illinois Valley (0-8-1). Goalkeepers Msughter Abel Dzoho and Saxon LaFlash split time in goal, with Dzoho starting for the second straight game and LaFlash entering at halftime. Neither was credited with a save in the combined shutout.

Madison College (5-2, 3-1) plays at North Central Community College Conference rival Rock Valley College (4-3, 2-2) on Wednesday. The WolfPack defeated the Golden Eagles by a 3-1 final earlier this month in the home opener, however, RVC has won three of their last four matches then. Madison College owns a 8-2-1 record in the all-time series thanks to a six-match win streak dating back to the 2016 season. Kickoff is at 4:00 p.m. in Rockford, Illinois.
