MADISON, WISC. - Two days after a pair of rough losses on the road, the Madison College baseball team was back at
Robin Roberts Field on Thursday, April 26 and earned a Region IV doubleheader sweep of Highland Community College. The WolfPack used one, multi-run inning in each contest to outscore the Cougars and pick up wins by the scores of 2-1 and 6-1.
Game #1: Madison College 2, Highland Community College 1 (7 innings)
An error and a walk put two runners aboard with two outs in the bottom of the third when freshman
Nathan Aide stepped to the plate. The Franklin, Wisconsin, native lined a double to right that scored
Lucas Trebian and
Walker Jenkins, giving the 'Pack a 2-0 lead.
That advantage would be just enough as WolfPack pitchers
Nate Brown and
Brandon Komar combined on a four-hitter with a single run given up in the sixth inning. Brown (2-3) struck out seven batters over six innings en route to his second consecutive win after starting 0-3 over his first five appearances. Komar worked the seventh and struck out the side for his team-leading second save of the season.Â
Madison College picked up five hits in the game, one each by
Cam Cratic, Jenkins, Aide,
Jerry LaSaint, and
Marquis Reuter.
Game #2: Madison College 6, Highland Community College 1 (7 innings)
A hot start to the nightcap put Madison College (22-14) in a fortuitous position to pull of the sweep, taking a 6-0 lead in the first inning, which included four hits, three free passes to first, and an error. A hit by pitch of
Jon-Anthony Caban with the bases loaded started the scoring surge, and first baseman
Jerry LaSaint followed with a two-RBI single to right. After the Highland Community College (17-24) error made it 4-0, a second hit batter forced in another run prior to
Cam Cratic's run-producing ground out in his second at-bat of the inning.
WolfPack starter
Jake Kopp (3-1) surrendered a single earned run on three hits and two walks to earn his third consecutive win. The West Best, Wisconsin, native struck out six over four innings.
Trentin Uttech worked 2 2/3 innings in relief and allowed a hit and a walk before giving way to
Jonathan Dominguez for the final out on a called strike three.
University of Iowa transfer
Adam LaRock picked up two of Madison College's six hits. Six different players scored for the 'Pack, and LaSaint's two-RBI day was a team-high.
Madison College has won eight straight over the Cougars and boast a 31-3 all-time record going back to 1979.
