ROCKFORD, ILL. - A season-high six-game winning streak came to halt on Tuesday, April 24, as did the hopes of a North Central Community College Conference championship, with a pair of one-run losses at rival Rock Valley College. The Golden Eagles surged out to big leads in both games before withstanding a furious WolfPack comeback in wins of 5-4 and 6-5. The setbacks also end a brief three-game win streak in the head-to-head series, which has seen RVC come out on top in five of the last eight meetings after the 'Pack ran off 29 consecutive W's from 1989 to 2016.
Game #1: Rock Valley College 5, Madison College 4 (7 innings)
Lefthanded ace
Jack Eagan and the Madison College defense struggled in the opening inning, giving up five runs on four hits, one walk, and one hit by pitch to put the visitors in a deep hole. The effort to climb out began in the third when freshman
Jerry LaSaint drove in a run and fellow first year
Nathan Aide pushed two across with a single to right. Three innings later, the 'Pack brought the deficit to a single run sophomores
Jon-Anthony Caban and
Chase Scharnek produced another run with a double and single, respectively. In the seventh, Madison College did get the tying run within 90 feet of home, but no farther.
Freshmen
Cam Cratic and
Adam LaRock both went 2 for 4 as the only players with multiple hits. Aide was the only player with more than one RBI.
Despite the early woes, Eagan (2-1) found a groove and went on to strikeout ten batters for the fourth consecutive start, giving him 45 K's over his last 24-plus innings. The Indiana University transfer was credited with five earned runs on six hits and two walks.
Game #2: Rock Valley College 6, Madison College 5 (7 innings)
Game two opened with a four-run bottom of the first against starter
Tyler Strzelczyk. The deficit was trimmed in half in the third when a bases loaded walk of
Adam LaRock forced in a run and
Nick Gile plated
Lucas Trebian with a sacrifice fly. Madison College (20-14, 6-4) completed the rally in the fifth, scoring three runs to take their first lead of the day at 5-4. LaRock singled in
Cam Cratic, and Gile's double to center brought in two more. The lead would not hold as Rock Valley College (26-18, 7-5) forced Strzelczyk from the game, and took advantage of a passed ball and a RBI single against
Jarrett Scheelk to score two runs. The 'Pack went 1-2-3 in the seventh.
Gile finished with three runs batted in on 1 for 3 hitting, while LaRock drove in two on a 1 for 2 day at the plate.
Walker Jenkins registered two hits to be tops in that category.
Strzelczyk drops to 1-3 with the loss and was on the hook for six runs, three of which were earned, on seven hits and three walks. He struck out two before giving way to Scheelk for the final 2/3 of an inning.
Madison College is 34-14 all-time against Rock Valley College.
