WolfPack tag Black Hawk College for 22 runs, 23 hits in weekend sweep

Madison College booms three homers to extend win streak to four games

MOLINE, ILL. - The Madison College baseball team brought the heavy lumber on their trip Sunday, April 22 to Black Hawk College as they piled up 22 runs on 23 hits to sweep the host Braves in a pair of Region IV games. The WolfPack scored a 7-1 win in the opener before busting out for a 15-3 decision in the nightcap, marking their third game with double-digit runs of the weekend. The two wins sends the 'Pack to a four-game win streak on the season and a 17-11 mark all-time with BHC.

Game #1: Madison College 7, Black Hawk College 1 (7 innings)

Madison College slowly pulled away from the Braves in the twin bill opener, putting up single run tallies in three of the first four innings. A fielder's choice off the bat of freshman Nathan Aide with the bases loaded in the first made it 1-0, and a Black Hawk College error with two runners aboard in the third pushed it to 2-0. In the fourth, first year infielder Jerry LaSaint led off the frame with his first career home run, a solo shot to right field to give the 'Pack a three-run lead. Looking for some more breathing room, Madison College pushed three more runs across in the sixth. Sophomore Chase Scharnek singled in Aide, a walk of Cam Cratic with the bases full brought Jon-Anthony Caban home, and the Scharnek scored on a wild pitch. The final run in the seventh also involved Scharnek, as his single to right advanced Nick Gile in from third.

Logan Michaels, LaSaint, and Scharnek each finished with two-hit games. Scharnek, a Waukesha, Wisconsin, native, led the charge with two RBI and a run scored. Four players all had at least one hit, with a run scored, and one batted in.

On the hill, freshman righthander Matt Hamilton (5-0) continued his recent run of success with six-plus innings of one-run baseball on six hits and a walk. The product of Oak Creek, Wisconsin, established a new career-best with nine strikeouts to remain unbeaten. Freshman Jarrett Scheelk tossed the final 2/3 of an inning, striking out a pair and walking two.

Game #2: Madison College 15, Black Hawk College 3 (7 innings)

The finale was a close game through three innings before Madison College scored four or more runs in three of the final four innings against Black Hawk College-Moline (23-10). Up 1-0 entering the fourth, freshman Nick Gile started the fireworks show with a solo home run to lead off the fourth. Three walks and a double later, and the WolfPack forced in another run before a fielder's choice and a sacrifice fly made it 5-0. Despite giving up two runs in the home half of the fifth, the 'Pack answered with the first of back-to-back five-run innings. In the sixth it was due to two hits, three free passes to first, and two Braves errors. Then in the seventh, Cam Cratic doubled in Lucas Trebian, Walker Jenkins scored on Caleb Hurt's sac fly, and Nathan Aide hit his second home run in as many days with a three run blast to center.

Nine different players had hits, with only Caban and Scharnek picking up multiple base knocks. Aide, a freshman from Franklin, Wisconsin, finished a career day with three runs scored and three batted in. Cratic, a former Madison East athlete, ended with three RBI and two runs scored, while freshman Lucas Trebian posted two of each. In all, six different players scored multiple runs and four players had at least two runs driven in.

First year righthander Brandon Komar (4-1) got the win with a six-inning effort that included a career-best ten strikeouts. The Elkhorn, Wisconsin, native surrendered two runs on four hits, and two walks. Another freshman, Nolan Rebernick, tossed the final inning and was tagged for one run, two hits, a walk, and a K.
