MILWAUKEE, WISC. - Despite one of their worst shooting performances of the season, the Madison College women's basketball team used a key second quarter run to defeat in-state rival Milwaukee Area Technical College, 64-56, on Saturday at Alverno College's Reiman Gymnasium. Three players combined to score 58 of the team's 64 points as the WolfPack pulled even with the Stormers in a tie for second place in the North Central Community College Conference standings, one game back of Rock Valley College.
Sophomore
Peyton Trapino matched a career-best with 25 points, while fellow second years
Megan Corcoran and
Cheyanne Jo Udelhoven added 20 and 13 points, respectively. Trapino, an all-conference guard last season, led the team with six assists and seven steals, establishing a new career mark for the latter. Corcoran and Udelhoven both notched double-doubles in the win. Udelhoven snared a career-high 12 boards for her first collegiate double-double, and Corcoran's 11 rebounds secured her third double-double of the season. The Madison, Wisconsin, native also denied seven Stormers' shots, setting yet another career mark.
The 84th all-time meeting between the two programs opened with the lead changing hands on several occasions and with the first quarter ending in a 14-14 tie. The second quarter opened with a 9-0 run, kicked by five straight points from Udelhoven. The lead was reduced to four before a Trapino jumper put the 'Pack ahead 29-22 at the break.
Less than two minutes into the second half, Madison College built its first double-digit advantage of the game at 35-24. However, Milwaukee Area Technical College (12-13, 8-2) put together a 10-2 surge, pulling the deficit back to a single point. Once again the WolfPack answered, ending the third quarter with a 10-1 run of their own to regain command of the game. In the fourth, the differential swelled again to 11 and narrowed as close as four, before the 'Pack closed out the win by scoring six of the final eight points.
Both team struggled to score the basketball, with Madison College going 22 for 69 to shoot 31.9%. It's the third lowest percentage for a game this season, and comes on the heels of a 29.7% effort the last time out. MATC-Milwaukee converted 21 of 74 (28.4%) shots overall. The WolfPack also went 6 for 28 (21.4%) from beyond the arc, but managed to knock down 14 of 19 free throws.
The win results in a regular season series split, with each team winning on the other's home floor. The WolfPack are now 73-11 in the head-to-head series.
