SURVIVE & ADVANCE: WolfPack overcome more rough shooting in quarterfinal win

19-point defeat of DuPage sends Madison College to semifinal vs. Joliet on Saturday at Redsten

MADISON, WISC. - Despite sluggish play on both ends of the floor, the Madison College women's basketball team still managed to defeat the College of DuPage by a 66-47 final in a NJCAA Region IV Division III Quarterfinal on Tuesday at H. Douglas Redsten Gymnasium. The second-seeded WolfPack used a 23-6 second quarter differential to pull away from the seventh-seeded Chaparrals and advanced to Saturday's semifinal round against third-seeded Joliet Junior College. The win gives the 'Pack 20 for the season, marking the fifth consecutive season the program has reached the 20-win plateau.

Madison College made just 4 of 19 shots in the first quarter and used a 6-0 run to end the quarter with a slim 11-9 lead. After the College of DuPage (3-22) tied the game to open the second quarter, the WolfPack scored 13 consecutive points to jump start a the winning effort. Seven different players scored in the ten-minute session that saw the Chaparrals convert 3 of 13 attempts. Up 34-15 after halftime, the 'Pack extended the advantage to a game-high 27 points on Megan Corcoran's back-to-back 3's, and again two more times before taking a 55-30 lead into the fourth. The Chaparrals continued to fight and outscored Madison College by a 17-11 margin in the final quarter before taking their 11th straight loss in the head-to-head series with the WolfPack.

Four players scored in double-figures, led by Corcoran's double-double of 17 points and ten rebounds. The sophomore was 6 for 15 from the field and 4 for 11 beyond the arc en route to her fourth double-double the of the season. The 5'10" guard/forward also registered one block to continue a streak of games with at least one rejection that now stands at 14.



Fellow second year players Peyton Trapino and Cheyanne Jo Udelhoven scored a dozen points each, with Trapino making 6 of 12 shots and Udelhoven using a pair of three-pointers in a 4 for 14 effort with two free throws to reach her final tally. Trapino, a 5'6" guard, paced the 'Pack with seven assists and four steals. The duo combined to grab 14 rebounds. 

Freshman Tianna Sackett reached ten points with 4 of 6 shooting, five rebounds, two assists, and two steals to help Madison College improve to 23-12 all-time and 1-1 in the postseason against COD.

The WolfPack finished 25 of 66 for 37.9%, it's tenth-lowest shooting percentage of the year and slightly better than the 37.0% (20-54) posted by DuPage. The home team also went 6 for 17 (35.3%) from deep and 10 of 16 (62.5%) at the charity stripe. Contributing to the win was a 47-34 edge in total rebounds, including 19 offensive boards that led to a 16-2 advantage in second chance points.

For the seventh consecutive year, Madison College (20-8) advances to the NJCAA Region IV Division III Tournament Semifinal at H. Douglas Redsten Gymnasium and will meet third-seeded Joliet Junior College (24-7). Both teams are receiving votes in the latest NJCAA Division III Poll. The WolfPack swept the regular season series with the Wolves, earning a 70-53 win in Illinois and a 58-55 victory on the home floor. The all-time series has the 'Pack with an 18-11 lead, including a 10-2 mark on the home floor. Saturday's tilt will be the fifth postseason meeting between the two teams, who have split the first four. Joliet defeated Madison College by a 73-70 margin in last year's semifinals. Game time is set for 2:00 p.m. and the winner will move on to play in Sunday's NJCAA Region IV Division III Championship Game against either top-seeded Rock Valley College or fourth-seeded Elgin Community College, a semifinal matchup that tips at noon in Madison.
