JOLIET, ILL. - In a matchup against the second ranked NJCAA Division III women's basketball team in the nation, a pair of Madison College sophomores stood head-and-shoulders above the rest.
Megan Corcoran and
Peyton Trapino combined to score 53 points, matching the output of Joliet Junior College in a 70-53 victory on Saturday. The WolfPack, winners of seven straight games, is 2-0 in North Central Community College Conference play for the second consecutive season.
Corcoran racked up 28 points for the second game in a row, making 8-of-19 shots with three 3-pointers and going 9-for-10 at the free throw line. The former Madison La Follette athlete has boosted her per game scoring average to 21.1 points with her fourth consecutive 20-plus scoring performance. Trapino converted 10-of-18 shots and 5-of-8 free throws to reach a career-high 25 points. The native of DeForest, Wisconsin, also matched a career-best with six steals in the game. The tandem combined for 13 rebounds, six assists, and one block.
After Corcoran opened the scoring for the WolfPack, Trapino put together a personal run of four consecutive baskets, the third of which gave Madison College a lead they would not relinquish at 8-6. By the end of the first quarter, the 'Pack owned a 17-12 advantage. The Wolves (14-4, 0-2) cut it to a two-point differential before Madison College closed a low-scoring second quarter with a 9-2 run the put them ahead by nine at the half.
Three minutes into the second half and the WolfPack were in possession of a double-digit lead at 35-24, which they extended to 50-36 heading into the fourth quarter. Another 9-2 surge handed the visitors their largest lead of the day at 19 points and put the game away for good.
Madison College owned the paint with a 36-20 advantage in points in the paint, which also contributed to a 44.6% (25-56) shooting day. Meanwhile, the WolfPack defense limited the JJC offensive attack to a 28% afternoon, going 21-for-75. The two teams combined for 43 turnovers.
Three other players scored for the 'Pack, accounting for the remaining 17 points to help snap a two-game losing skid against Joliet. Madison College is now 17-11 all-time against the Wolves.

Madison College (10-5, 2-0) hosts its N4C home opener on Wednesday, January 10 against in-state rival Milwaukee Area Technical College (5-11, 1-0). The WolfPack swept the regular season series last year and have won five of the past nine meetings against the Stormers. Through 82 all-time meetings, Madison College has a one-sided edge in the series with a 72-10 record. Game time is set for 5:30 p.m. inside

Wednesday's doubleheader against MATC-Milwaukee is also North East Side Youth Basketball (NESYB) Night, with youth players from Madison's north and east side communities in attendance. The teams will scrimmage during halftime of both the women's and men's games.
