GUARD PLAY: Small lineup, hot shooting yield highest point total of season

Burton sends WolfPack to Sophomore Day rout of Harper with record three-pointers

MADISON, WISC. - Going with an all-guard starting lineup for the first time this season, interim coach Bill Kegler's team responded with a record-setting shooting performance to give the Madison College men's basketball team a lopsided 111-83 rout of Harper College at H. Douglas Redsten Gymnasium. The WolfPack matched a season-high for points in a game and saw nearly all seven players that suited up score in double-figures. Jezzriah Burton, playing in his final regular season home game alongside longtime teammate and friend Tyree Young, tied a program record with eight 3-pointers on Sophomore Day.

Burton and the WolfPack came out on fire, scoring the game's first eight points in the first three minutes of action. After Harper College (4-23, 2-10) scored baskets on successive possessions, Burton splashed back-to-back three-pointers as part of a bigger 18-4 run. The Milwaukee, Wisconsin, native continued to fire at will from long distance, hitting three more before the game was even ten minutes old. Burton went on to bury two more triples, sandwiched between two from freshman Nathaniel Buss and one by first year Kye Burcham, as the 'Pack closed the half with a 29-12 surge that opened up a 61-36 advantage. When the first half ended, Madison College had made ten 3-pointers, including seven by Burton, and shot 69.4% (25-36) overall. The impressive shooting performance even included a run of ten consecutive made field goals.

The long-range shooting cooled off in the second half with just two makes out of nine attempts beyond the arc, but the WolfPack picked up the slack on the interior. Reserve forward Marcus Riser put his name to good use, rising above the rim on three occasions for emphatic slams. The transfer from UW-La Crosse scored six straight points to extend the home team lead to a 33 points eight minutes into the half. Shortly after the 'Pack reached the 100-point plateau for the second time in three games, the differential reached its peak with less than four minutes remaining when Sean Suchomel's runner extended the score to 105-70. Madison College matched its point total from a 111-71 win over Kishwaukee College in mid-December as it finishes the regular season with a 9-4 home record.

Burton's finished with a career-high 30 points on 11 of 21 shooting, scoring 25 of his points in the first half. His eight triples ties the mark for the most in a game in program history, set by Chad Peterson in January 1995. Saturday marked Burton's 11 game with at least ten points this season, and his sixth with four or more makes from long distance.  He added four rebounds, two assists, and two steals in the game.

Fellow second year guard, and Burton's former teammate at Nicolet HS, Tyree Young scored 14 points on 6 of 11 from the field and 2 for 2 at the free throw line. He also had seven assists, four rebounds, and a team-leading four steals.

Another career-high was established by Suchomel, as the former Sun Prairie Cardinals standout tallied 21 points on an extremely efficient 10 of 11 shooting overall. His lone miss came on one of two 3-pointers. He nearly registered the first double-double of the season the nine assists, to go along with six boards and two steals. And speaking of near-miss double-doubles, Buss finished with 16 points and nine assists, while also only missing one shot from the field. The Verona, Wisconsin, native converted 6 of 7 shots with one miss from three-point territory.

Burcham and Riser each scored in double-figures with 11 and ten points, respectively. The lone player not to reach double-digits in scoring was Alex Easterday, though the freshman posted nine points and tied Suchomel for team-high honors with six rebounds.

Madison College drained 46 of 69 shots for a season-best .667 shooting percentage, the 12th time they have collectively made at least half of their field goal attempts. The dozen 3-pointers is the third highest total of the year, and gives the 'Pack eight outings with at ten or more makes from downtown. Additionally, the home team scored a 62-36 edge in points in the paint and a 30-13 advantage in points off turnovers en route to a split of the regular season series with the Hawks. The WolfPack now own a 12-10 lead in the all-time series, and have won six of the last eight meetings.
