MADISON, WISC. - The difference in Saturday's men's basketball game between Madison College and NJCAA Division II Carl Sandburg College proved to be a pair of 13-2 runs by the visiting Chargers, who left with an 89-77 win inside
H. Douglas Redsten Gymnasium. The WolfPack struggled against interior play of Sandburg, which was plus-16 in points in the better and finished with a 46-25 advantage in total rebounds. The loss is the first at home this season and puts the 'Pack at 0-2 all-time against the Chargers.
Even at 7-7 after a
Sean Suchomel basket just over four minutes into the game, Carl Sandburg College (5-2) scored a 13-2 surge to take the game's first double-digit lead as the home team missed five of six shots. Despite their best efforts, Madison College could not get any closer than seven, and saw the deficit grow to as much at 15 before the first half came to a close. The second half proved to be quite competitive with both teams scoring 43 points. Freshman
Bryce Moore's three-pointer with 15:31 to play cut the difference to seven again, however, another 13-2 burst pushed the score differential to a game-high 18 points. Madison College never got closer than the final differential of a dozen points.
The WolfPack shot 43.5% for the game by making 27 of 62 field goal tries. After struggling to a 4 for 15 (26.7%) effort from beyond the arc in the first half, Madison College converted 6 of ten from long range in the second half. Carl Sandburg finished at 50.8% (33-65) overall and 7 for 18 (38.9%) from distance. Both teams attempted 18 free throws, with the visitors making 16 and the home team 13. Sandburg was also better in points off turnovers (+4), second chance points (+6), and points in the paint (+16).
Sophomore
Jalen Addison did not start for the first time this season, but came off the bench to lead the WolfPack in scoring with 18 points, 14 of which came in the second half. Addison, a transfer from Parkland College (IL), went 6 for 11 from the floor and 2 for 6 outside the arc, while also making 4 of 6 free throws, to reach double-digits for the fifth time this season and boost his scoring average 17.0. Additionally, the guard led the 'Pack with five assists, to go along with two rebounds and two steals.
Freshman
Adam Anhold was the only other player in double-figures with a dozen points thanks to 4 of 7 shooting and 4 of 6 at the line. The forward also matched sophomore
Alex Easterday for the team-lead in rebounds with five. Easterday, along with
Nathaniel Buss and
Bryce Moore, all scored nine points. Moore, a Sun Prairie, Wisconsin, native, made his first collegiate start and scored all of his points in the second half.
