WolfPack drop N4C first place battle to Rock Valley

Turnovers, poor rebounding negate hot shooting early in 79-64 loss

MADISON, WISC. - An opportunity to remain atop the North Central Community College Conference standings came and went Wednesday as the Madison College women's basketball team was unable to keep up with rival Rock Valley College in a 79-64 loss at H. Douglas Redsten Gymnasium. Some hot, long range shooting by sophomore Cheyanne Jo Udelhoven gave the WolfPack an early advantage before the Golden Eagles took advantage of strong rebounding and too many 'Pack turnovers to win the matchup of teams receiving votes in the latest NJCAA Division III Poll. Through the first half of the N4C season, Madison College now sits a game back of league-leaders RVC and MATC-Milwaukee.

With the intensity level at peak levels from the opening tip, Madison College seized the early lead on a 10-4 run capped by a Udelhoven three-pointer. Rock Valley College (10-12, 6-1) stayed close and pulled within a basket at 17-15 by the end of the quarter. Udelhoven provided the firepower with back-to-back triples to open the second quarter as the teams exchanged buckets. Still leading 31-26 with six minutes left in the half, the Golden Eagles gained the momentum and outscored the 'Pack by a 16-4 margin, taking a seven-point edge into halftime. Madison College did not register a field goal during that stretch.

Rock Valley College extended their lead into double-digits in the third quarter thanks to three consecutive three-pointers. The WolfPack closed to within eight on two different instances, however, RVC found an answer each time and owned a 65-53 lead through three quarters. The differential reached its peak of 17 points in the fourth quarter.

Udelhoven, a native of Fennimore, Wisconsin, scored in double-figures for the third consecutive game, using a career-best 6 of 8 shooting from beyond the arc to reach a team-high 18 points. The six 3's ties Udelhoven for fifth most in a game in program history, and also accounted for all of her made field goals. She made five of the shots in the first half. Fellow sophomore Megan Corcoran scored 11 of her 17 points in the second half, finishing with three field goals from three-point territory. Second year guard Peyton Trapino contributed 15 points, while also leading the team with seven rebounds, six assists, and three steals.

Madison College shot 19 of 45 (42.2%) overall, while Rock Valley College made 33 of 73 (45.2%) field goal attempts. The WolfPack knocked down a season-high ten 3's and 16 of 19 (84.2%) free throws. The Golden Eagles also controlled the glass with a 38-29 edge in rebounding, including 15 offensive boards, and owned sizable advantages in points in the paint (46-14), bench points (32-8), points of turnovers (14-9), and second chance points (10-7). The home team was also done in by 26 turnovers, its most since committing 33 in a road loss to Bryant & Stratton College in late November.

Rock Valley College now boasts a 19-18 lead in the all-time series after winning its third straight over the WolfPack, who have only won three times in the last 18 meetings.
