MADISON, WISC. - A one-man wrecking crew arrived Wednesday night at
Irwin A. & Robert D. Goodman Pitch-East and single-handedly brought the Madison College men's soccer team's undefeated start to the season to a close. The WolfPack had no answer for Triton College's Patryk Szatko, whose three-goal hat trick was enough for the Trojans to win 3-0 and hand the 'Pack their first loss of the season. The final result also give's Triton, ranked #7 in the latest
NJCAA Division III Poll, sole possession of first place in the
North Central Community College Conference standings, while Madison College falls into a two-way tie for second place, one game back.
No surprise that in a match of unbeaten team's tied for the league lead, the game featured plenty of physical and competitive play. The team's combined for six yellow cards - five coming in the second half - and 39 fouls. Triton College (5-0, 3-0) was the more aggressive squad and controlled most of the match with a 26-14 advantage in total shots and an 11-5 edge in shots on goal.
Szatko, a freshman forward, busted through the WolfPack defense to score his first goal in the 22', giving the Trojans a 1-0 lead they would carry into halftime. Just 42 seconds into the second half, Szatko struck again with an assisted goal and a 2-0 cushion. The final tally came in the 88' and put the game away for good for Triton.
Of the five Madison College shots on goal, two came from freshman midfielder/defender
Daniel Gutierrez, while
Shane Paterson and Jake and
Toby Andrews each had one. Goalkeeper
Blake Dehn finished with eight saves.
Wednesday's match marked the first time the WolfPack had been shutout since a 2-0 loss at Triton College on September 14 of last season, and marked the 16 loss in 22 all-time meetings.
