MADISON, WISC. - Despite a differential of 26 in the overall shots category, Friday's match between in-state and North Central Community College Conference men's soccer rivals Madison College and Milwaukee Area Technical College was tied into the final ten minutes of regulation. That changed when the WolfPack scored the game-winner with less than six minutes to play in a 3-2 victory at
Irwin A. & Robert D. Goodman Pitch-East. The win comes in the first game following the 'Pack's only loss of the season, and marks the tenth straight in the head-to-head series.
For 37 minutes the two teams traded blows in an attempt to snap a 2-2 tie, and as the game clock ticked closer to 90, freshman forward
Ali Barry capitalized on the moment with a one time shot that flew past the MATC-Milwaukee (1-3, 0-3) goalkeeper that gave the WolfPack a lead they wouldn't relinquish. For Barry, a former Madison West HS athlete, the goal is his first career score after being added to the roster just prior to the loss to Triton College two days earlier. Barry attempted three shots on goal and six overall in his 55 minutes of action.
The match began with 34 minutes of nil-nil soccer before another freshman forward,
Shane Paterson, scored on an unassisted goal in the 35'. It was the second goal of the season for the native of Catterick Garrison, England, and it was shortly followed by the first career scoring strike for midfielder
Vital Nizigiymana in the 38' to put Madison College ahead 2-0. The Stormers managed to tie the game with goals to end the first half and start the second, coming in the 45' and 48', respectively, against WolfPack goalkeeper
Blake Dehn.
The match ended with a 34-8 discrepancy in total shots favoring the home team, who also had a 15-6 edge in shots on goal. Nizigiymana was the most aggressive to the net, attempting a career-high eight shots and four shots on goal. Dehn picked up four saves to go along with the two goals allowed as Madison College improved to 38-15-2 in the all-time series that dates back to 1981.
