MADISON, WISC. - It didn't take long Sunday to realize who the best team on the
Irwin A. & Robert D. Goodman Pitch-East was as the Madison College women's soccer team raced out to a six goal lead in the first 20 minutes before settling for a 9-0 win over Illinois Valley Community College. Three different players scored two goals a piece in the WolfPack's highest scoring match of the season, and the most since defeating Milwaukee Area Technical College by the same score late last season. The back-to-back season-opening wins matches the 2016 club for the best start in program history.
The Madison College offense and defense was equally impressive in the lopsided win, as the attack amassed 41 total shots in the match while the defense limited the Eagles (0-3) to a single shot on goal over 90 minutes. Of the 41 shots by the home team, 28 were on goal, with several coming off the 9-0 advantage the 'Pack had in corner kicks.
A pair of DeForest, Wisconsin, natives started the early onslaught with when freshman
Britt Schumann converted
Peyton Trapino's pass in the 3' minute. The goal was the first career tally Schumann and the first assist by Trapino, though both would add to their totals before the day was over. One minute later sophomore winger Breanne Kreklow made it a two-goal advantage with a scoring strike on a pass from freshman
Esther Noriega. Noriega, a midfielder from New Glarus, Wisconsin, found herself on the scoring end in the 13', knocking a goal past the Illinois Valley goalkeeper to make it 3-0. Fellow first year
Sarah Hamilton was credited with the assist for her first collegiate point. In the 15',
Sydney Schulze did all the work with an unassisted tally, giving the freshman winger her first career goal.
The final two goals of the early rush came over the next four minutes and both involved Trapino. A point guard on the basketball court in the winter, Trapino displayed more of her passing ability by setting up
Tierra Sackett's first collegiate goal to make it 5-0. Then she added a score of her own off an assist from Noriega, giving Trapino her second goal of the year and sending the WolfPack into the locker room with a 6-0 cushion.Â
Madison College continued to add to its lead in the second half, starting again with the "Norski" connection of Shumann and Trapino. Schumann became the first player this season with a two-goal game, scoring in the 55' and giving Trapino another assist. Kreklow added her name to the list of two-goal scorers with a successful kick in the 86' that gave Hamilton her second assist of the day. Two minutes later, the WolfPack counted their final goal when Noriega joined Shumann and Kreklow to become the third player with two goals in the game. Trapino was credited with her fourth assist of the game, moving her into sole possession of second place for most assists in a single game in school history behind five by
Katie Travis last season.
With a significant amount of the action happening on the Madison College offensive side, goalkeeper
Brandie Gospodarek saw limited action and recorded her lone save in the 56'. The former Beaver Dam HS athlete now has six career shutouts and has opened the season with 180 scoreless minutes.
