PALATINE, ILL. - A second consecutive two-goal performance by
Britt Schumann helped rally the Madison College women's soccer team from a one-goal deficit and pick up a 2-1 win at Harper College on Wednesday. With the win, the WolfPack have surpassed last year's team for the best start to a season in program history at 3-0, and also snapped a two-game losing skid in the head-to-head series against the Hawks.
Having never trailed through the first two games of the season, Madison College found itself in unfamiliar territory after Harper College (1-2, 1-2) converted an early goal in the 4'. The goal also ended a 183-minute scoreless streak to start the season for sophomore goalkeeper
Brandie Gospodarek.
The uncertain feeling didn't last long, however, as Schumann netted the equalizer in the game's 11'. The score came on an assist from freshman striker
Tierra Sackett, her first of the season.
The score remained even at one into the second half before the DeForest, Wisconsin, connection struck for the third time in two games for the game-winning goal. Schumann took a pass from
Peyton Trapino and slipped it past the Hawks goalie to give the WolfPack the lead at 2-1 in the 75'. For Schumann, it's her team-leading fourth goal, and for Trapino it was her fifth assist, also a team-high.
The 'Pack controlled the game with a 27-5 edge in overall shots and an 11-5 advantage in shots on goal. That differential included just one shot on goal allowed by the Madison College defense over the final 15 minutes as they protected the one-goal lead. Gospodarek finished with four saves.
