MADISON, WISC. - The North Central Community College Conference men's soccer match between Rock Valley College and Madison College began Wednesday at 6:00 p.m. at
Irwin A. & Robert D. Goodman Pitch-East, but it ended 48 hours later after lightning and heavy rains stopped the action at the 52:37 mark of the second half. When it was finally over, the WolfPack had secured a 4-1 win that snapped a season-long three-game losing streak, and gave the 'Pack a regular season sweep of the rival Golden Eagles for the second consecutive year.
Due to the severe weather, the teams were unable to play the minimum required 70 minutes or resume play within the same calendar day, forcing both squad to re-convene for a full 90-minute match two days later, per NCAA rules. They then played Friday under intense heat and humidity.
Twenty minutes into the contest, Madison College scored first when freshman forward
Shane Paterson received a pass from fellow first year
Logan Sandin-Carstens, and slipped one past the Rock Valley (6-3-1, 3-3-1) goalkeeper for a 1-0 advantage. For Paterson, a native of Catterick Garrison, England, the goal was his fourth of the season, while Sandin-Carstens registered his first collegiate point with the assist. The score moved to 2-0 before the end of the half when forward
Ali Barry found the back of the net for the second goal of the season from the former Madison West HS athlete. The goal was assisted by
Daniel Gutierrez, marking the third assist on the year for the former Madison La Follette HS athlete.
Early in the second half, Â the WolfPack struck again with leading scorer
Toby Andrews converting a Paterson pass for a 3-0 lead in the 51', giving Madison College a one-goal-better-lead than it had when Wednesday's match was suspended. Andrews twin brother,
Jake Andrews, joined the scoring party with a goal - assisted by Barry - that put the match out of reach in the final ten minutes. Toby, an All-American last season, has nine goals on the year, while Jake has three.Â
Sophomore goalkeeper
Blake Dehn finished with a single save and one goal allowed as the Madison College defense limited RVC to just two shots on goal and four shots overall, compared to eight and 14, respectively, for the WolfPack. The 'Pack now boasts a 7-2-1 record in the all-time series, and are back to .500 in league play.
