MADISON, WISC. - Never before have the Madison College women's soccer team been able to claim sole possession of first place in the North Central Community College Conference standings; until now. Thanks to yet another two-goal performance by freshman Brit Schumann, the WolfPack upset
third-ranked Joliet Junior College, knocking the Wolves from the ranks of the unbeaten and out of a two-way tie atop the league. The statement win pushes the 'Pack's record-setting start to the season to five straight wins.
Neither team was able to find offensive success throughout a gritty first half that ended in a scoreless tie, but both teams punched in a goal during the early portions of the second half. Schumann struck first off an assist from fellow first year
Esther Noriega (3) to give Madison College a 1-0 edge in the 51'. Two minutes late it was the Wolves finding the back of the net with a 53' equalizer against WolfPack goalkeeper
Brandie Gospodarek, just the second allowed by the sophomore.
In the game's 75th minute, Schumann was able to slice through the Joliet (7-1, 4-1) defense for a second time and convert a
Tierra Sackett (2) pass for the game-winning goal. The DeForest, Wisconsin, native has eight goals on the season, scoring two in each of the last four games. It was also Schumann's second game-winner of the season.
The WolfPack controlled a majority of the action with a 17-11 advantage in shots and a 12-8 edge in shots on goal. Schumann attempted four of the shots on goal for the 'Pack, while
Peyton Trapino was credited for two. Gospodarek made seven saves and owns the fifth-best goals against average in the nation at 0.42.
