Schumann hat trick powers WolfPack past Triton, into NJCAA rankings

The freshman is scoring at a record-setting pace during 6-0

RIVER GROVE, ILL. - The best start in program history continued Monday night with a resounding 6-1 win at Triton College for the Madison College women's soccer team, and less than 18 later the WolfPack find themselves ranked #3 in the latest NJCAA Division III Poll, marking the first time the program has ever been ranked. Highlighted in the win was another stellar scoring effort by freshman Britt Schumann, whose hat trick continues a torrid scoring stretch that could eventually challenge every scoring record in school history. The win keeps Madison College in sole possession of first place in the North Central Community College Conference standings, and gives the 'Pack a 6-1-1 all-time record against Triton after a fourth straight "W" in the series.

By the 17' mark, Schumann, a former DeForest Area HS athlete, owned a 2-0 lead on the host Trojans. The striker scored the game's first goal in the 9' off a pass from fellow former Norskie, Peyton Trapino, and then found the back of the net a second time with an unassisted goal in the 17'. Both teams would score one more time before the half. Triton College (2-5, 0-5) converted a rare score on goalkeeper Brandie Gospodarek in the 26', while Madison College's Breanna Kreklow and Esther Noriega combined to make it 3-1 with less than 12 minutes remaining in the half. It's the third goal of the season for Kreklow, a sophomore from New Glarus, with Noriega picking up her fourth assist in the last three matches.

Less than five minutes into the second half, the Schumann-Trapino connection struck again as the latter set up the former for her career-high third goal of the match. Schumann now boasts five consecutive multi-goal games, with her 11 total goals sitting four shy of the single season goals record with eight regular season games remaining. Trapino's two assists push her team-leading season total to eight, and with a 33 points, she is two back of tying the single-season record.

Despite the comfortable lead at 4-1, the WolfPack kept pushing and added two more goals in the final 12 minutes of the match. Freshmen winger Sydney Schulze registered her third score of the season in the 79' off the second career assist for defender Abby Meehan. And in the 88', first year midfielder Jasmin Valdez from Elkhorn, Wisconsin, scored the first goal of her collegiate career when she converted a pass from sophomore defender Aja Gurney, equaling her first career point.

The relentless WolfPack offense attempted 31 total shots and 20 shots on goal, compared to four shots total - all were on goal - for the Trojans. The visitors also held an 8-0 edge in corner kicks.

Gospodarek finished with three save and one goal against. Her Triton counterpart collected 14 saves with six goals allowed.

Up Next:

Madison College (6-0, 5-0) travels to Rock Valley College (4-2-2, 2-2-2) on Friday, September 22 to play for a regular season sweep of the Golden Eagles, a feat the WolfPack have never accomplished after losing the first six contests between the two programs. The 'Pack downed RVC by a 1-0 final in the season opener last month, with Trapino netting the game-winner. Gametime is at 4:00 p.m.
