WHITEWATER, WISC. - The Madison College volleyball team played their first five-set match of the 2017 season Tuesday, and despite scratching and clawing to escape the fourth set with a two-point win, they simply could not find enough points to push their nine-match win streak even further in the decisive fifth set. The second-ranked WolfPack traded sets with the NCAA Division III UW-Whitewater JV before taking their third loss of the season, 25-21, 18-25, 25-19, 25-27, and 15-10. The final result also snapped a seven-match win streak against the Warhawks, who pulled even in the all-time series at nine wins apiece.
After seven consecutive matches with an attack percentage above .200, Madison College fell just short of that mark with a .196 efficiency on 44 total kills and 15 attack errors. Helping ease the struggles offensively at the net were 82 digs collected by the WolfPack defense, the second highest total in a match this year.
Sophomore
Megan Corcoran registered a team-best 12 kills on a team-high 39 attack attempts. The outside hitter and former Madison La Follette athlete tallied her third double-double of the season with 14 digs. Corcoran also added two solo blocks and two service aces.
No other player had double-digit kills, with fellow second year
Samantha Jacobsen racking up nine kills on a team-leading .280 hitting percentage.
Sophomore setter
Keely Brown also finished with a double-double, her seventh in the last nine matches, as she dished out 17 assists and collected 13 digs. Freshman setter
Olivia Darkow had 14 assists and a team-high three aces, one better than Brown.
A trio of freshman also pitched in defensively, with specialist
Maddie Scalissi pacing the back row with 22 digs, while
Kendra Nicolay had 11. And
Mariah Capra was tops in blocks with three solo and two assisted.
