MADISON, WISC. - Eager to get their 2017 season underway, the Madison College women's soccer team had to demonstrate a high level of patience before sending a statement to the rest of the North Central Community College Conference with a 1-0 upset win over #7 Rock Valley Community College late Wednesday evening. The winning goal off the foot of first year midfielder
Peyton Trapino their third consecutive season opening victory, but more importantly, snapped a six-match losing streak against the Golden Eagles.
After a long double-overtime win for the men in the opener of a soccer doubleheader, followed by a symbolic grand opening ceremony for the new
Irwin A. & Robert D. Goodman Pitch-East, the team's finally kicked off. Exactly seven minutes and 54 seconds later, the game was suspended a lightning and severe weather approached. The suspension lasted more than two hours before the teams re-emerged from shelter and resumed play.
Madison College and Rock Valley College (1-1, 0-1) traded scoring opportunities throughout the match, though the WolfPack was the aggressor with twice as many shots overall (12-6) and a 7-3 advantage in shots on goal. The WolfPack also earned five tries from the corner, but still came up empty.
That changed as the game neared it's final ten minutes - and with the actual clock now past 11:00 p.m. On the attack, Trapino used a perfect pass from sophomore winger
Breanne Kreklow to finally knock one past the RVC goalkeeper for a 1-0 lead in the 79'. The goal is the first career score for the DeForest, Wisconsin, native, who spent last winter starring on the hardwood as the point guard of the Madison College women's basketball team. Kreklow tallied her fifth career assist.
To secure the victory, the 'Pack held off all final offensive surges from Rock Valley, including a shot that sailed wide left with less than seven minutes to play. Sophomore goalkeeper
Brandie Gospodarek finished with three saves for her fifth career clean sheet.
Madison College (1-0, 1-0) remains home for a Region IV match against Illinois Valley Community College (0-2) on Sunday, September 3. The WolfPack earned a 5-1 win last fall in the only prior meeting with the Eagles, who lost 6-0 to Rock Valley College on August 25. Game time is slated for 1:00 p.m. in Madison.
