WolfPack baseball rebounds to take two from Prairie State

Madison College outscores Pioneers 30-2 over 11 innings

SUN PRAIRIE, WISC. - Wet field conditions in Chicago Heights, Illinois, forced Sunday's doubleheader between Madison College baseball and Prairie State College to be moved to a neutral site venue at Sun Prairie High School just outside Madison. The little taste of home-cooking helped the WolfPack rebound from two losses the day prior to pick up a doubleheader sweep of the Pioneers, with wins of 16-2 and 14-0.

Game #1: Madison College 16, Prairie State College 2 (6 innings)

A close game through three innings broke wide open in the fourth. Trailing 2-1, Madison College loaded the bases with one out when High Point University transfer Nick Blomgren singled to left, driving in a pair of runs to regain the lead at 3-2. It would be a lead the 'Pack would never relinquish. Three batters later, and again with the bases loaded, Tanner Umentum roped a two-RBI double to left for a 5-2 advantage.

The WolfPack added three more in the fifth on a two-run scoring double from Cade Bunnell and a fielder's choice grounder by Chase Scharnek that score Bunnell from third for an 8-2 lead.

Madison College finished off the game with a seven run outburst in the top of the sixth. Facing yet another bases loaded situation, Bunnell drew a walk to force in a run, Garrett McGraw did the same on a hit by pitch, and Scharnek made it 11-2 with still another walk to push Chris Lund in from 90-feet away. With two outs and the bases still loaded, Bryce Plate knocked in two with a single to center, before Logan Michaels and Carson Carmody each hit run-scoring singles to round out the scoring.

Nine different players registered a hit for Madison College, and rightfielder Chris Lund was the lone player with multiple hits, going 2-for-4. Cade Bunnell and Tanner Umemtum each finished with three RBI, setting a new season-high for Umentum. Chase Scharnek had two runs batted in, and tied Ty Jandrowski for team-high honors with three runs scored, season-high marks for both players.

On the bump, Riley Pelischek (1-2) earned his first win of the season going five innings and allowing just one earned run on three hits. The Denmark, Wisconsin, native established a season-high with seven strikeouts. Reliever Jon Anthony-Caban tossed a scoreless sixth inning, giving up one hit and picking up one strikeout.

Game #2: Madison College 14, Prairie State College 0 (5 innings)

The momentum continued into game two of the twin bill, with Madison College seizing control early. Playing as the home team, the WolfPack produced three runs in the first inning. The first two runs came for free when the Pioneers' starter walked the first five of the first six batters of the game. Chase Scharnek's ground ball to the right side plated the third. It became 4-0 in the second when Tanner Umentum was able to score on an error by the PSC second baseman.

Then in the third, Madison College hung ten runs on the board, sending 16 batters to the plate. In all the WolfPack tallied five hits and six walks in the frame. Highlighting the effort were Umentum's two-run double to left, Ty Jandrowski's RBI single to right, a run-scoring double to left by Logan Michaels, and a two-RBI single for Sage Bruhl that made it 14-0.

In all, the WolfPack drew 13 walks in the five inning game. Of the seven players with hits, only Logan Michaels was able to collect two of them. Six different players finished with two runs scored, and Sage Bruhl had a team-high three runs batted in. Umentum and Caleb Hurt were the only players with multiple runs scored and driven in.

From the mound, Matt Hamilton (1-0) threw three innings of four-hit baseball to earn his first collegiate win. Connor Fedders and Riley Pawelski also tossed scoreless innings. The trio combined for four strikeouts to help the WolfPack secure their 11th straight victory over Prairie State.

Madison College (12-8) will hold its home opener at Robin Roberts Field on Tuesday against College of Lake County (13-10). The WolfPack have won 25 of the 28 all-time meetings against the Lancers. First pitch is set for 2:30 p.m., with the nightcap slated to begin at approximately 5:30 p.m.
