HIT PARADE: WolfPack bats sweep away Morton College

Cade Bunnell, Zach Bailey go deep in home opener at Robin Roberts Field

MADISON, WISC. - Twenty games into the season and the Madison College baseball team was finally able to play a home game Thursday, and the comforts of Robin Roberts Field helped ease the WolfPack to a doubleheader sweep of Region IV foe Morton College. The 'Pack won by scores of 9-2 and 9-5, outhitting the Panthers by an 18-12 margin to extend their winning streak to four straight games.

Game #1: Madison College 9, Morton College 2

The visiting Panthers were able to score first in the day's opener, plating two runs in the top of the second off sophomore Hank Schau. However, they would be the only runs the Park Ridge, Illinois, native would allow in the game after he settled in to retire 11 consecutive batters into the sixth inning.

Madison College answered right back with their offensive surge in the bottom of the second to claim a lead they would never surrender. Cade Bunnell led off with a single and was joined on the base paths by Nick Blomgren after a walk. Freshman Logan Michaels then dropped down a sacrifice bunt towards third, but the third baseman threw the ball away and Bunnell was able to score. A hit by pitch would load the bases with nobody out for Chase Scharnek, who hit a sacrifice fly to center to score Blomgren and tie the game. With runners at the corners and two away, the Panthers again gifted the home team a run with a second throwing error on the third baseman on a Drew Steinmetz grounder that allowed Michaels to score what proved to be the game-winning run.

The WolfPack blew the doors open with a five-run third inning that was keyed by Cade Bunnell's first home run of the season, a two-run opposite field bomb to left to make it 5-2. A hit parade of four singles in the next five batters produced three more runs to hand the 'Pack a six-run lead. The final run tally came in the fourth when Scharnek, with the bases loaded, hit his second sacrifice fly of the game to bring in Bunnell.

Morton College was able to put three runners on base over the final two innings, but Schau (4-0) refused to let the Panthers back in the game. The righthander has earned a win in all four of his starts this season and has now gone the distance in back-to-back outings. Schau allowed two runs on four hits and a season-high four walks. He struck out seven batters and dropped his ERA to 2.70 over 26.2 innings.

Cade Bunnell and Logan Michaels both went 2-for-3 at the plate. Bunnell, who transferred from Kansas State University, posted a season-high three runs scored to go along with two driven in. Chase Scharnek went 1-for-1 with a hit by pitch and two sacrifice fly outs, and paced the WolfPack with a season-high three RBI.

Game #2: Madison College 9, Morton College 5

The second game began with both teams failing to convert with runners in scoring position, and after second-ear starter Sam Lund struck out the side in the top of the second, the Madison College offense sprung to life. With no outs and two runners on, Carson Carmody extended his hitting streak to four games with a two-run double to the wall in right centerfield. The Barneveld, Wisconsin, native scored one batter later on a Zach Bailey two-bagger to right. After Sage Bruhl reached on a perfect bunt down the third base line, freshman Tanner Umentum followed with a successful bunt hit of his own to score Bailey for a 4-0 lead. Cade Bunnell finished off the big inning with the WolfPack's third double of the frame, this one scoring Bruhl and Umentum.

Bailey, a sophomore from Janesville, Wisconsin, put his stamp on the game in the third inning with his first career home run. Carmody reached on a two-out single to bring Bailey to the plate, and he sent the second pitch of the at bat clear over the left field wall for an 8-0 edge. The blast also marked the end of the day for the Panthers' starting pitcher.

Morton College (7-14) scored their first run in the fourth on an inning-ending double play that featured second baseman Tanner Umentum tagging out a runner caught in a pickle between first and second, and then spinning in the air to fire a strike to catcher Nick Blomgren to nail another runner attempting to score.

The WolfPack tacked on another insurance run in the their half of the fourth before Sam Lund ran into some trouble in the fifth. An error, walk, and a single loaded the bases with two outs, and a single and a double by the next two hitters brought in three runs to cut the visitor's deficit to just five runs. Another score in the sixth made it 9-5 heading into the seventh, when coach Mike Davenport turned to reliever Jon-Anthony Caban. The freshman from Milwaukee, Wisconsin, went 1-2-3 to close out a sixth straight win over the Panthers. Madison College is now 12-5 in the head-to-head series.

Sam Lund (3-1), a native of Sun Prairie, Wisconsin, was on the hook for just one earned run on eight hits and four base on balls. He struck out eight batters en route to his third consecutive win.

Four different players finished with multiple hits as the WolfPack outhit the opposition by an 18-12 differential on the day. Zach Bailey finished with a career-high three runs batted in, while also tying Carson Carmody for the team-lead in runs scored with two. Carmody and Cade Bunnell both registered a pair of RBIs.

Madison College (14-8/0-2) travels to Joliet Junior College (12-14/3-1) on Friday seeking their first win in North Central Community College play. The WolfPack own a 27-13 advantage in the all-time series after splitting four games last season to the Wolves, who just fell out of the NJCAA Division III Poll. First pitch of the doubleheader is at 2:00 p.m., with game two to follow at approximately 5:00 p.m.
