Baseball win streak snapped in WolfPack DH split at Joliet

Eagan, Frank combine for seven-inning, one-hitter in opener

JOLIET, ILL. - The Madison College baseball team extended its winning streak to five games with a 6-0 blanking of Joliet Junior College on Friday. The win also marked the first in North Central Community College Conference play this season. Unfortunately, the WolfPack then dropped the second game of the doubleheader, 7-5, to snap their extended streak.

Game #1: Madison College 6, Joliet Junior College 0

The day began with righthander Jack Eagan dominating from the pitcher's mound. The transfer from Indiana University locked up the Joliet batters before leaving the game in the sixth inning. Eagan (4-0) allowed just one hit in the bottom of the third inning, and kept the Wolves off the scoreboard to drop his season ERA to 1.24. For the second straight game, Eagan struck out a career-high nine batters; however, the Wautoma, Wisconsin, native also walked a season-high five batters and hit another.

The WolfPack opened the scoring in the second thanks to five successive singles. Drew Steinmetz, Zach Bailey, and Sage Bruhl each had a hit and a RBI as the visitors built a 3-0 lead. In the fourth inning, a walk and a hit by pitch to Bryce Plate and Bruhl, respectively, put runners on Stoughton, Wisconsin, native Cade Bunnell. The sophomore transfer singled to center to bring both in and increase the advantage to five.

The final run came in the sixth when another lead off walk to Plate turned into a run on an error by the first baseman. Brandon Frank entered with two outs in the sixth to relieve Eagan and recorded a strikeout. He then saw the minimum three batters in the seventh to hand the 'Pack the win.

Sophomore Zach Bailey was the only player with more than one hit, going 2-for-3 with a run batted in. Cade Bunnell had a game-high two RBI, and Bryce Plate crossed home a season-best three times.

Game #2: Joliet Junior College 7, Madison College 5

The Wolves jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the second game, scoring a single run in the first, third, and fourth innings. Madison College pulled to within a run in the fifth when Garrett McGraw single to center with runners at second and third, both of whom came in to score. A two-out rally in the sixth evened the contest at 3-3. Nick Blomgren doubled and Chase Scharnek singled him in.

The game opened up in the home half of the sixth when Joliet Junior College (13-15/4-2) used four hits, two errors, and a wild pitch to push in four runs and take a commanding 7-3 lead. Starter Matt Hamilton left the game after a single up the middle made it 4-3 and left a runner at third, giving way to reliever Darren Strasburg.

The WolfPack tried to rally in the seventh, and got a big boost from Tyler Strzelczyk. The freshman from Tinley Park, Illinois, boomed his first career home run to left field, a two-run shot that brought Madison College within 7-5. Two more singles with no one out put the tying run on, and eventually at second base, but Cade Bunnell foul tipped strike three into the catcher's mitt and Chris Lund flew out to right field. After Caleb Hurt walked to load the bases, putting the go-ahead run on, Nick Blomgren struck out looking to end the game.

Tyler Strzelczyk finished with a season-high two runs, two hits, and two runs batted in. Sage Bruhl and Garrett McGraw matched him with two base knocks as the 'Pack have now split the last six meetings with JJC. McGraw also had two RBI, while Carson Carmody tied for the team lead with two runs scored.

After missing time early in the season due to injury, Matt Hamilton (0-1) enjoyed his longest outing of the season going 5 2/3 innings. The Oak Creek, Wisconsin, native allowed five runs with just two earned on five hits. He struck out five and walked two in his second start of the season. Darren Strasburg allowed two unearned runs on two hits in his 1/3 of an inning.

Madison College (15-9/1-3) continues its N4C slate with a home doubleheader against NJCAA DIII Harper College (8-7-1/1-1) on Saturday. The WolfPack have won eight straight over the Hawks and hold a 14-4 advantage in the all-time series. The twin bill is scheduled to begin at 12:00 p.m. at Robin Roberts Field, and game two will begin at approximately 3:00 p.m.
