GLEN ELLYN, ILL. - Everything seemed to be in order for the Madison College baseball team as they held a two-run lead in the seventh to open their first doubleheader of the North Central Community College Conference schedule. The lead, however, did not hold, and the WolfPack went on to get swept at the College of DuPage (NJCAA DIII) on Saturday, losing by scores of 6-5 and 9-1.
Game #1: College of DuPage 6, Madison College 5
In the league opener for both teams, neither was able to score until the third inning when Madison College stacked together three hits, including a pair of doubles, with two walks to take a 4-0 lead. The WolfPack loaded the bases a two walks sandwiched around a Kian O'Brien double, and brought cleanup hitter
Chris Lund to the plate. The sophomore slugged a single to left to score two runs and leave two more in scoring position. Those runs would eventually cross home when
Logan Michaels smacked a two-out double to right field.
The Chaparrals got one run back in the fourth on a solo home run against starter
Jack Eagan, and continued to chip away in the fifth. Eagan surrendered two more runs thanks to two singles and a base on balls to make it a 4-3 WolfPack advantage.
Madison added an insurance run in the top of the seventh, though it would come at a price. With one out, O'Brien was hit by a pitch on his hand to reach first safely, and after a steal of second, scored on a double to left by Lund for a 5-3 edge. The hit to the hand proved costly in the bottom half as the 'Pack tried to close out a sixth straight win. O'Brien was forced to leave the game with a hand injury, forcing coach
Mike Davenport to shift his infield. With reliever
Tanner Umentum on the mound, a leadoff single and a walk for DuPage brought the winning run to the plate with nobody out. Following a groundout to third, back-to-back singles each drove in a run to even the game at five and with runners at the corners. Another walk by Umentum loaded the bases. On the ensuing at bat, a slow roller to third ended with an error by third baseman
Sage Bruhl, allowing the winning run to come in to score for a walkoff win.
Tanner Umentum (0-2) took the loss with two earned runs allowed on three his and two walks in his 1 1/3 innings of work.
Jack Eagan posted a season-high nine strikeouts over five innings. The transfer from Indiana University gave up three runs, five hits, and three walks.
Chris Lund and
Kian O'Brien led the offensive effort with 2-for-3 performances at the plate. Lund matched a season-high with three RBI and O'Brien had a team-best two runs scored.
Game #1: College of DuPage 9, Madison College 1
The game two storyline was all about DuPage starter Kyle Pauly, who limited the WolfPack offense to just one run on two hits. The lone run came in the fourth when
Tanner Umentum opened the inning with a double to left. He advanced to third on a passed ball, and after a walk of
Chris Lund, scored on a double steal.
Unfortunately for Madison College, they already trailed 7-0 by that point. College of DuPage (11-12/2-0) scored two runs in the bottom of the first, then pulled away in the third with a five-run inning that chased second-year starter
Branden Frank from the hill for freshman reliever
Darren Strasburg. Frank fell to 1-2 with the loss after issuing six runs, six hits, and four walks. The transfer from Kaskaskia College lasted just 2 1/3 innings. Strasburg was on the hook for three runs, two coming in the sixth inning, and five hits in his 3 2/3 innings. The duo combined for six strikeouts.
The only two hits on the day belonged to Tanner Umemtum and
Tyler Strzelczyk. Umemtum, a Denmark, Wisconsin, native, scored his fourth run of the season as the WolfPack suffered their first sweep at the hands of the Chaparrals. The 'Pack is now 22-4-1 all-time, but are 2-3-1 in the last six meetings.
Madison College (10-8/0-2) will play another doubleheader on Sunday against Region IV foe Prairie State College (4-20). The WolfPack is 10-1 all-time against the Pioneers, winning the last nine head-to-head matchups. Due to wet field conditions, the games have been moved north of the Illinois-Wisconsin border and will be played at Sun Prairie High School in Sun Prairie, Wisconsin. First pitch of game one is slated for 12:00 p.m., with game two set to begin around 3:00 p.m.
