HIGH FIVE: WolfPack earn second consecutive sweep at Elgin

Seventh-inning run propels Madison College in opener

ELGIN, ILL. - The Madison College baseball team continues to find ways to win games as they stretch their early season win streak to five straight after a road sweep of NJCAA Division III Elgin Community College on Tuesday. Game one required a late inning run to pull out a 3-2 victory before early offense keyed a 6-2 decision in the finale.

Game #1: Madison College 3, Elgin Community College 2

An error and a poorly timed base on balls handed Madison College a narrow win over the Spartans after the game was tied at two heading into the seventh inning. Freshman Logan Michaels kicked off the game-winning rally with a single to right, and Stetson University transfer Sage Bruhl followed with a double to center to put runners at second and third. After an intentional walk of Kian O'Brien loaded the bases, Zach Bailey went down swinging for the second out of the inning. However, freshman Caleb Hurt worked walk to force in Michaels for the go-ahead run.

Sophomore starter Hank Schau (3-0) worked a 1-2-3 bottom of the seventh to close out his third win, and first complete-game effort, of the season. The righthander limited Elgin to two runs on a single hit with seven strikeouts. The former Maine South (IL) HS athlete now boasts a 2.75 ERA over 19-plus innings on the hill.

The game opened with two scoreless innings as Schau set down the first 11 batters he faced. In the top of the third the WolfPack punched across their first run on a Chris Lund single that plated O'Brien from second after he singled to left and advance on a wild pitch.

It remained 1-0 until the fifth with both teams put runs on the board. Madison College began the frame with a double to left by Bruhl, and when O'Brien dropped down a bunt, the Spartans catcher threw the ball away and allowed Bruhl to score. Elgin came right back to tie the game in the home half. Schau hit the lead off batter and then gave up his lone hit of the day, a RBI double to center. Two batters later a ground ball to the left side produced the second run.

Chris Lund finished a team-best 3-for-4, while Kian O'Brien and Sage Bruhl each went 2-for-3.

Game #2: Madison College 6, Elgin Community College 2

Madison College kept the momentum of the late win in the opener to ignite their offense in the nightcap, scoring all six runs in the first three innings. Northbrook, Illinois, native Sage Bruhl drew a lead off walk. and then advanced to second on a wild pitch and to third on a Kian O'Brien single. He later scored on an error by the Spartans catcher to make it 1-0. Elgin (5-7) tied the game in the home half thanks to two singles, a walk, and a fielder's choice back to pitcher Sam Lund that resulted in the run.

The WolfPack enjoyed a three-run second inning with a pair of extra base hits. South Mountain Community College transfer Chase Scharnek roped a double right that drove in Garrett McGraw, who had walked one batter prior. Two batters after Scharnek it was O'Brien with the two bagger to left field that scored another run. And O'Brien eventually scored on a hard hit single to right off the bat of first baseman Ty Jandrowski, who saw action in his first games since going down with a leg injury on March 11 against Scottsdale Community College in Arizona.

Up 4-1 going into the third, the 'Pack put up it's final two runs on a two-RBI single by Bruhl with the bases loaded. Coming in to score were Bryce Plate and McGraw, who hit back-to-back singles with one out, prior to Scharnek's base on balls that loaded the bases.

Sophomore Sam Lund worked into the fifth inning and allowed two runs on eight hits and two walk. The former Sun Prairie athlete struck out five as he improved to 2-1 on the season. Riley Pelischek and Matt Hamilton saw relief action and combined to allow just one hit, while striking out three.

Kian O'Brien finished as the lone player with multiple hits, going 2-for-3 with an RBI and a run scored. Garrett McGraw had team-high honors with two runs scored, and Sage Bruhl led the way with a pair of runs batted in to help the WolfPack improve to 25-19 all-time against Elgin.

Madison College will begin North Central Community College Conference action with two road games against the College of DuPage (7-12/0-0) on Saturday. The WolfPack went 2-1-1 last year against the Chaparrals, the loss snapping a 15-game win streak dating back to their last game as non-conference foes in 2000. The all-time series shows the 'Pack with a 22-2-1 advantage, including a 9-0-1 mark in Glen Ellyn, Illinois. First pitch of the opener is at 12:00 p.m., with the nightcap to follow at 3:00 p.m.
